I managed 38.2 once, over 100 miles, driving like a pensioner, sticking to 60mph. It was so boring, Xdrive 35d.

I have the 4.8i and I can get almost 25mpg on a decent motorway run and I’m averaging 21mpg just on my 25 minute rush hour commute. I have no idea how some people are getting worse figures than that in a 3.0l diesel.

The more horses you have, the more you have to feed them I suppose...... the 3.0 single turbo is better on fuel.

The best mpg i got was aprox 34mpg and that was on a run from Blackpool to Milton Keynes. With lots of 50 mph zones thrown in for good measure...

Well, exactly, that's what you'd expect. That's why I'm surprised that there are people on here with a 3.0sd that have quoted worse figures than mine. Even the averages that are better than mine aren't that much better.

I'm not surprised by the mpg I get from the 4.8 - it's exactly what I expected when I got it - but I didn't realise the gap between that and what should be the most efficient engine in the range, would be so small.

More power does mean more fuel, but the 3.0sd really can't stick to factory claims for MPG. I wonder how they achieved those figures, must have been doing 56mph or something on the motorway. Funny that it achieves 25mpg average in the X5, but same engine in the 6 series achieves 47mpg combined.

My X6 has never achieved ‘factory’ figures - as is common with most cars - but 35mpg for the twin turbo 40d is still fairly easy to achieve on a long motorway run.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

My "other half" managed to get 37mpg from my 40d recently on a run back from Cornwall.
She has a lighter right foot than me.... ;) :)
