Hi Guys,
I have just taken my X5 for an MOT at my local MOT Garage and was told that Near side gaiter is split. The repair will cost £130.
There was also an advice that the other side might need changing sometime soon
1) Is £130 per side within limits or a little bit steep?
2) Is it advisable to have both done?
3) since local Garage doing the job I take it that its nothing that requires the dealer's expensive grubby fingers to sort out hence stick with local garage?
cheers

That seems a bit steep mate tbh - think I paid about £60 per side for mine at my local mechanic.
General concensus seems to be do them both, and no, it's definitely nothing you need trouble the stealer with
One final thing, make sure you get proper boots fitted, not the 'wrap around and glue together' things

It does sound a little expensive....I did my own on the drive and cost me £6 per side and agree with the glue ones being a waste of time

Any recomendations around the bexleyheath area?

I have never used Nigel & Jags before but they run a well know indy In Bexleyheath
clicky Not as cheap as all makes mechanic using cheap parts but sometimes it's not aall about cheapest price. maybe call foir price &/or search for customer reviews.
Due to an MOT failure I once paid an all makes garage to change a balljoint on the Z3........2 or so weeks later it failed & due to being badly fitted. Next stop was a trusted BMW indy.

Which shows how much they rip us off when I did both mine in 3.5 hours on the drive, in the dark via a lead lamp......btw I'm no mechanic and just have a go like x555.

Must add that the indy I used was
not the one I linked.
I only linked that site as it was near to Bexleyheath......I removed title and caused the indy name to be hidden but not before I wa quoted with the whole indy url in place.
IIrc quote for 2hrs p/side was from eleswhere
I will check my invloice fore the time charged.......It may have been less time

From my indy invoice dated August 2008...........
3.5hrs Labour £204.75
BMW CV Gaiters x 2 £53.62
Drive shaft lock nuts x 2 £10.80
Total £323.00 assuming todays vat rate of 20%
I think they charged me 3.5hrs both sides so 1.75hrs p/side
£161.50 per side for BMW parts labour & vat at todays rate.
No doubt labour charge may have gone up over 3 yrs since this done.

AW8,
that (augmented) invoice price is still higher than I have been quoted.
Is Nigel in Welling at the garage behind the Tyre shop?
Pewtres how difficult is the DIY job compared to replacing Pads & Disc ?

The invoice prices I posted were from an indy I used in Sussex & not from anyone linked above.
I have never used the indy I linked to. I only posted the link as I thought it might be of use to you as that indy is well known & local.
No idea where they are in relation to you - all you have to do is open the link I posted & look for location info.
I could have got cheaper quotes but sometimes cheaper can mean a poor parts &/or work. My price breakdown to give idea of sout heat indy costs not to show cheapest price out there.

IMO £130 per side is not a bad price.................the £60 quoted by another member is frankly very cheap. My BMW parts alone were circa £40 per side with vat at todays rate !
Have used cheap boots & even zip fitting repair boots on tired carsmany years ago.....Someimes cheapest option can be a false economy.
Big respect to those on here who have done this job.
Not as complex as some jobs but harder than changing brakes IMO, ( & more tools required).
D.i.y. link here .............courtesy of & credit to hayaku on xoutpost .
Not trying to discourage anyone from diy but I know limits of my abilities patience & luck. My worst fear always of making call to indu saying car en route in bits & on a trailer.
I also lack a garage I can get car into, a decent jack & certain tools.
Note to self............must try harder to tackle bigger diy jobs

My brilliant indy in Brighton has just (yesterday) done my 2 outer cv gaiters...
2 * £30.25 for parts
£90 for labour
+VAT
Very happy with that, looks some of these dealers are a bit 'slow' ;-p
