Okay update on no sound.

Having purchased a circuit tester I have checked all fuses.

The circuit tester illuminates all fuses in glove box & trunk with exception of fuse number 29, (in glove box), which is labelled as heated steering wheel. My car does not have this option & thus I am assuming this needs to be coded to be enabled/live. I appreciate the seeming irrelevance of this but it was suggested on here that someone with same problem rectified the fault by changing a seemingly unrelated fuse. I removed the 30A fuse and found the fuse socket not giving power. I also fitted another fuse but still dead......obvious really if socket not live. Anyway further checks indicate we have power to the module.I went into the trunk & removed the socket which plugs into back of the radio module, (definitely flat pin BM54 - Part No 65128385897). I checked BM54 connector Pins 15, (Red & Green), & 16 (White & Red) , both are live & showing power feed to BM54 is live. (As prior stated BM54 plug in fuse has also been swap checked but I also confirmed this was live when plugged in).

I have spoken to Cartronics GB in Byfleeet Surrey who offer repair to BM54 Becker units via ebay for £175 & discussed what I have checked thus far. They say all checks point towards the module being faulty & in need or replacement or repair. I can currently source a secondhand unit for £225 so tempted by this...Ideally I would 1st test same if buying used but interested on whether folk would get repaired or swap for a little more.

Have had other expenditure recently, trying again to buy a house plus Z3 had recent work & now needs sump repair or replacement. Both could do with coolant changes before winter, X5 would like new pads/discs & tells me via Peake reader it might need a new lambda sensor soon. Initial priority is house, then technical bits & probably & annoyingly last the BM54 module.

Will endeavour to sort but sometimes I think that returning to Japanese.....might make sense - maybe a Lexus RX & S2000 instead of X5 & Z3.

As the song goes - I need a dollar, dollar, dollar......

Not happy it's the module for you.

More bloody expense! But as you're asking, I'd get it repaired. You then have full history of the unit, no guarantees replacement unit won't do the same to you in a week/month/years time. Knowing the parts have been replaced/repaired and with a years warranty just seems a better option. In the same situation as you but I will repair when I get some dollars!

Know the feeling with the constant maintenance on the cars - 1 series had rocker cover gasket, sump gasket and vacuum pump seal replaced (3 separate visits as oil was still leaking/burning smell - process of elimination). NOW the little sh!t is still stinking of oil burning on startup/once warm and it transpires I need a new vacuum pump as it has a hairline crack. Oh and the X did me for 4 new tyres and an injector.

I need a few dollars, dollars, dollars...

Well at least I know I'm not alone with car expenditure.

Since typing re the ebay repairer Cartronics I have also spoken to another repairer on ebay as listing number 180695103634 relating to ebay member sound-secure in Rochdale. I called Guy but initially no reply - to my pleasant surprise he called me back within 10 mins. Rather than merely offering to take my money he got me to explain the problem & listed to what I had done. He specifically asked if I had orange light on - which I don't. He charges £134.99 & said he would try to repair but added this occasionally isn't possible if no orange light. He said if he couldnt fix it he could sort me another unit for around £200, (this is exchange price instead of repair & not in addition). Only downside is that he is up north so no ability for me to visit in event of issue. That said I have checked his ebay feedback & even found a positive testimonial on bmwland from someone who has met the guy & had a repair done.

Oh and my X5 insurance renewal just came through the door..........£527

A bit far for you it's Rochdale. Would only need someone to pop in in unlikely event of problem that couldn't be sorted by phone, but to be fair to the guy he sounded very legitimate & helpful plus I've done some testimonial digging too

Keep us posted on how you get on, I have no sound but with mine the orange light still functioning fine.
With my current luck that will be a million times worse!
Rochdale is maybe an hour for me, I might take my car up there next month if I haven't figured it out by then so PM me if I can help out with yours, I'm sure we could co-ordinate it so they're both in at the same time.

Hello,

It would be normal for problem to be radio module if NO sound.

Not sure if you have other problem as my screen still goes up and down. I do not think a damaged module will cause problem to motor on the screen.

Hopefully others will no more.

Thanks........Yes, same guy. Decent bloke I have told him I am admin team here so he may read my posts & threads ;)

We discussed price along lines you I spoke of on phone & he seemed okay with arrangements

I sent it to him yesterday, he said no need to pay until he has had a good look at it & ascertained what problem is & if it can be fixed. effectively I haven't lost anything as the unit was not working.

Just have to wait & see now.

States he has fully checked it but cant easily fix, (which I accept)- will hopefully be sorted soon though as I am being sent another BM54 unit.

Not the best timing in light of other expenditure

Was working through last night but had to sort problems with Z3 this morning, (been supplied the wrong sump), & after work & this morning. Went to bed at 11am, but between then & my wife returning just after midday I missed signed delivery of the refurbished replacement BM54 radio module. Neighbour left note to say they had taken it in but I had to take the Z3 sump to post office. On my return neighbour out & has been out since......I can actually see parcel sat in their porch.

Not having best of luck at moment, (either with cars or other non related attempted purchases).

New, (used - checked &/or refurbished), BM54 unit now in the car

All working fine.

This has also cured the problem I spoke of a while ago whereby I couldn't seem to control the nav volume, (from main or hidden menus), which on old unit seemed to have a random will of it's own
