yeah it was the widescreen one, i had looked at quite a few guides on changing them over and had tried looking for info on the swaps but i didnt really find anything saying that only certain years onwards could do it. i think the problem i'm finding is info on the web on X5's isnt very vast, maybe thats more down to the buyer/owner type, possibly more likely to pay a tech to have something done, maybe only now are they becoming more accessible to the "diy" typers, oh well, i'll let the old man know then, he'll probably just re-sell it on ebay again. should hopefully get his money back.

so is there any real upgrade options for him that dont involve rewiring the car? cos my days of doing that are over lol i'm guessing it its just a case of an aftermarket stereo as his only option then?
Correct - aftermarket only. Theres a few option, search for Dynavin and Hualingan, they are straight swaps for what you already have but they have their short comings which I won't go into here as there are 10 page threads on these units!

Its not the year of your car, its all down to whether it originally had sat nav & a monitor or not. e.g. Mine is 2001 fitted with small screen nav and the widescreen was a straight swap for me. A 2006 with the professional stereo like yours would not be a straight swap, purely because it never had a monitor to begin with.

I have just bought a widescreen monitor off ebay for mine or I would be offering to buy yours. What did he pay for it and what condition is it in?

As for info, this http://www.xoutpost.com/file-x5tips.htm is like an X5 owner's bible for alot of modifications

Cant remember what he paid, i know it was a little cheaper than the typical going rate as the front trim surround for it was missing, we just figured we could pick one up later on from ebay, Cheers for the information guys, will no doubt be asking about something new for him tomorrow lol

its been a busy couple of weeks getting stuff done on the car, air con sorted, 2 new rear tyres, seat bolster redone, windows tinted, , then windows retinted, towbar fitted, cleaned properly instead of what the so called "valeter"did lol, and the figuring out what best handsfree method to go for, and the monitor and no doubt other stuff...so heads kinda overwhelmed with x5 info....despite not actually owning one lol, but its starting to look really good now, i just need a few dry days and some time with the polisher to make it that bit better.

will probably service it next month at somepoint

What was wrong with the seat bolster and how did you sort it? Mine is a little flat and could do with re-stuffing or something

Seat bolster was actually done by the dealer he bought it from, i looked over the car and pointed out stuff that needed doing on it, guy did a smart repair on a pretty knackered and torn seat bottom bolster, i actually thought the guy had stitched in a new piece it was that well done, only thing is the dealer didnt pay for the upper to get done so that now looks a bit worse compared to the new looking bottom bit, but think he might get the guy that did the smart repair to do it and he'll pay for it.

methinks it was a fatty that had his X5 previously

there's still stuff i have to do, like replace the ribbon on his instrument cluster as the pixels are pretty bad, he didnt buy the other as he thought he was getting a screen, guess thats changed, will have a read about the dynavin units, they could be his answer, might also consider a car pc as we have an in dash touchscreen headunit kicking about....hmmmm
