There may be an OEM kit - I think one of the Philips kits actually works with the existing lighting. You should be able to buy the same kit elswhere, cheaper. The kit works on a number of BMWs

If your dealer will print out the EBA number shown on the link, then that also gives you the instructions for fitting :-)
Hmm. My dealer says not available as they were never actually type approved?.
DRL's are required on all new builds after Feb 2011
My smart is may 11 and doesn't have drl?

Just went shopping and found Philips selling these direct on eBay, http://shop.philips.com/store/rpeeub2c/ ... .234594400

And this tuturial from Philips, which is perhaps obvious but it seems to confirm what i have been told, that the OE sidelights do not switch these on, it is ignition activated :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grmPzh1iels

Another, slightly different :? tutorial here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiKZdhG5 ... re=related

Yet more! in this link the packaging clearly states they illuminate with ignition, so i'm off to procure some! http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/1 ... ss_eng.pdf

I now have a copy of the official BMW EBA detailing the installation. It applies to all BMWs according to the text. It is a pdf, 11 pages long, but I can't upload it to here as there's no current facility to do it.

We have the option on both the X6 and Mini although the Mini version actually turns on the dipped headlights and the X6 version turns on the Angel Eyes and rear sidelights.

Is there an option to do just that, on the E53? ie, switch on the angle eyes only in the front and the rear side lights as DLRs?

I'm in the Scanner 1.4.0 playing field now :crazydude:

I've just tried switching to the US1 mode, but that fires the xenons along with the angels. i only want the angles firing as DLRs in the front, like X5Sport has mentioned re. the X6.

Found the answer to that oddity. The DRL rules apply to all cars type approved from Feb 2011 onwards and not 'new builds' as my Dealer told me. Your Smart must have been type approved before then so hence none being fitted. I guess BMW just decided to start fitting them from Oct 2010 - no doubt as part of another price increase :x

I sometimes wonder if it was even type approved

No to be fair it is a good little car and ticks all of the boxes that I have it for
