subjective, but I think you're making some wise decisions there.

graeme, guess that explains your price - you're talking main dealer prices i think, also main dealer prices to repair stuff.
some just keep to the main dealers, i personally think the premium is too high. and like dirty monkey said if ur willing to get ur hansds dirty (don't need to be the monkey part

) , u have a decent indy for stuff u can't handle on your own, you're much better off buying more for less, outside the dealer network.
u might be better off paying for a premium warranty which covers moving parts as well if ur really risk averse.

I have had absolutely no worries at all with mine - I got mine from main dealer and then kept up the BMW Warranty which has meant that I have had my problems sorted at no cost at all... I have had Air Bags replaced, Level sensors, Diff Seals, Valvetronic Levers, Parking Sensors, Sunroof etc etc...
You can run into expensive bills in any high-end car, especially when it is more than a few years old. It is a game of roulette whether you get a good one or not... and roulette is a game I didn't want to play so I got the Car I wanted, with the engine I wanted, with the toys I wanted (and more), and a Warranty that took away the worry.
For 16k you could get a Main Dealer X5 with 12 Months Warranty and MOT Cover and then carry on the Warranty when it expires - by that time hopefully you will get a feeling for the car and you will have ironed out any niggles.
4.4 and 4.8 aren't much different - a couple of Airbags and bigger Brakes etc but the Airbags don't often fail. Its more likely to be the level sensors or the module and both models have these!
If you don't have a need for the Pano roof then I would agree with you to find one that doesn't have it. Don't be too upset if a car that takes your fancy has one though - you don't have to use it

Agree 100% with Turks (maybe I'm a bit biased about the 4.8 too!) I paid a premium for the one I wanted from BMW , it had virtually everything (including the lovely Webasto) and I've kept up the BMW warranty. So far its had a brand new Bluetooth unit under warranty,a new oil cooler and a few other bits and pieces and needs a bonnet alarm switch and a new FSR when it goes in for service shortly - the warranty has been very good, no worries or trying to weasel out of it.
I'd buy another BMW AUC any time, been very happy with it and the service, but it does come at a price. And it would be a 4.8 for me,wins hands down!!!

Hi thanks for all help and advice so far and I've made a bit of progress with car situation I've decided to get a 4.4 for the time being.
The reason is my brother in law got one in part ex and I had a test drive and well definitely went well and he said he could do a deal and would give it me at a good price. It's a 2004 54 plate 4.4 X5 with 67k miles in sapphire black with sand nappa leather with sat nav but no tv and a Denison iPod link. But as it's not a 4.8 it has no pan roof or front air susp.
But at the price I got it for Ive got a bit left to be able to add a few bits to it. Now I have to fix a couple of bits on it but not too much the first is the parking sensors and then a shopping list of bits to update or change probably to add the le mans arches and the 4.8 style wheels and have a think about sat nav tv DVD unit.
Will get pics of car up shortly.

Thanks Lee4.4is I think it was the sound of them and the comfort which attracted me a bit smoother than my smart car I use for work but it does thejob Monday to friday.
Although saying this i drove my brother in laws X6 3.5 diesel at weekend and that's like a V8 and definitely next on the list.
