I thought the law stated that you can as long as it lets in 70% light. ( stand to be corrected ).

The percentage is visible light transmission so the lower the percentage the darker the tint.

So 20% only allows 20% of the light through. 35% (or really 50%) is more OE sun protection glass.

You are correct Steve that the law currently states 70% on the fronts. As most standard manufactured glass is just above this, any added tints takes it over this (hence no tints before the B pillar).

plus, the tinted polythene gets scratched with the window up/down movement (its not as hard-wearing as glass itself) which also reduces light passing through, so even if u had 70% light passing through at the start it deteriorates with time and you can be breaking the law without even knowing it.
