Hi All
In answer to the question, no I wasnt having any lurching or slipping problems , or any problems whatsoever.
My gearbox works A1 ( or did before ) I hope to pick it up tommorow if I get time, I will report back then.
I am a time served mechanical Engineer and come across equipment that gets abused, and is running in very bad enviroments and never breaks down. Yet some are looked after, treated well, serviced regularly and still gives trouble. there is no hard and fast rule when dealing with cars and machinery, or I would be out of a job.

I had mine done at an indy.  They blogged the change on their website, which shows how its done which i liked.

My old fluid was golden and clean.  Apparently if its dark grey or brown then its burnt, showing signs of clutch plate wear, i was relieved that mine was clean.

total cost was just over £200 including the mobil oil that is a special grade i believe, gasket and filter for my 5 speed ZF auto box.

I've noticed no change in how my car drives, still changes gear as it should and doesn't slip.  Im totally against the opinion that changing the oil causes issues.

Mine was replaced as there was a gasket failure / slow leak - done under warranty. No probs with gearbox before or after.

Hi all
picked up the X tonight  from the gearbox service, all well, infact at certain junctions where I approach down hill where previosly the gearbox used to change down under braking abruptly, this was strange as ive owned several BMW autos over the years and they were not as rough on the change down, if they changed down at all.
Gearbox seems very smooth, espesially on down changes.
Only time will tell. I didnt get chance to enquire if the old oil was in bad condition, as I was on the minuites when picking it up.
I will give it a good  test this weekend and report back. Any problems I will buy a Toyota next time !!!!!

thats good to hear. all the best

btw, on the downhill, mine tends to scream as well. although i've heard from other E53 users that that's normal..

i always thought that's how bmw liked the x5 to behave cos it gives the car lot more control. then again this is my first auto, so maybe that's how other autos behave as well...

On a downhill section if the brakes were applied for any period then the box would down shift to 'hold' the speed so the car was using engine braking instead of the main brakes (which can of course overheat just when you need them :drive: )

I think mine used to lock into either 3rd or 4th depending upon the selected speed and then change up again as soon as the throttle was re-applied.  I haven't noticed it being as abrupt or noisy on the X6 though.

Mine does the same, but if you only lightly apply the brakes, is appears better.
On the X6, is it less noticeable because it's 8 speed and so the steps are smaller?
