No still got internet. Thanks Sanj for the info but this takes me onto problem 2..... A few months ago I dropped my router whilst doing some painting in the lounge, which stopped me connecting up a ethernet cable as it doesn't recognise one is plugged in !!!! I knew it would come to haunt me . Any what I've done is shot an email to my ISP with the hope they will send me a new one.

I'm going to be looking into getting some sort of CCTV system fitted, I've taken ages looking and I've got myself nowhere, spotted all sorts of things I want but I have no idea of how to go about installation or even if I should just go to a CCTV installation expert.

Had a lot of harassment and vandalism to my property over the last coupe+ years and after another window stoning, enough is enough

Any kit recommendations?

Good camera and hard wire, so far have a 100% catch rate of all events recorded.

As has been said, go for the highest resolution camera you can and hard wire it. We've got a professionally installed and maintained system which uses Sony camera guts in an anti vandal body. Connected via something they call 'shotgun cable' whick Looks like large speaker cable with one side carrying a pair of wires which runs 12v power down to the camera whilst the other cable is the coax video return. If you are in any way mechanically and electrically competent it's not a difficult job to DIY. The tricky bit is the cable runs back to the camera PSUs and the DVR. Ours is a Day/Night system. Runs 24/7 and constantly records. If I remember correctly, the first install was about £900 for the first cameras and the DVR. It's been upgraded since. Depending upon spec and budget you can have between one and sixteen cameras. Accessible over the web and will send emails out if there are any alarms.

It's not something I had ever considered, but after SWMBO had the front bumper nicked off her E46 we decided we need to do soething. A number of our neighbours have now done the same. An appalling view of modern society I'm afraid, but sometimes you have no choice.

Shotgun cable indeed best and costs 25 GBp for 100 metres. I did all myself and spent about 2500 on the kits.

Worth every penny though.

Local scrotes see the big house and flash cars and think I must be "lucky" and not someone who actually got off his a**e then decide to do a bit of street justice police have failed to do anything and I actually had to contact my local MP to even get them to turn up the last time over three weeks after the initial call, they weren't even bothered by a burning newspaper through the door and being out of the country for prolonged tours is a surefire way of coming back to a burned out wreck at some point.

Ok so I'm back after the router problem led to no internet after doing a reset. New router now installed so alls good. As for cctv systems I got mine via Ebay from a cctv company down south as I had issues with vandals and the like. They were very helpful over the phone with any issues/questions I had. Its a 4 camera system with a 25 metre night range. All cameras are ip67rated which is good for outside and are hard wired,the dvr has a 500gig hd so on permanent record will hold up to 3 weeks before it over records.Ive got it set on motion record which will give you a good couple of months. The software is easy to use to set things up. All in all the system was £399 which I thought was good for what I needed it for. The one thing I did do was to use a transmitter/reciever to send the video signal down stairs to the TV in the lounge as the DVR is in the loft. This allows us to to view all cameras at a touch of a button.All in all it took me a couple of hours to fit and set up so very pleased. I will dig out the ebay name for anyone interested.

Sounds good, I was just quoted 900 plus vat for a two camera set up

Price difference is in camera quality though. My most expensive camera is almost £400 by itself.

It depends what your needs are to be honest. My cameras are 520TVL with 35 blue IR leds 92 degree lens with up to 25 metre range. I suppose if you live in a large house with large grounds then you will need something better perhaps. Have alook at http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/u-see_tech/
