Xenon's have something like 'BMW Xenon' embossed on the dipped beam
[/quote]

i think that's only on the dynamic variant ie the once that turn with the steering angle...  i think the non-dynamic xenon ie the ones that don't turn with the steering don't have that lettering..

i think the 'flash' from the dipped beam on a cold switch on is the easiest way to identify.. from outside..

Pete, if you have xenons then you should find that your dash light switch will not have the adjusting wheel for levelling the lights as xenons self level automatically.

Hi Raj
My lights auto level when the ignition is switced on ,or when I manually turn the lights on.
And I have the adjusting wheel on the dash 0-1 - 2 positions, this also adjusts the lights, also have headlight washers. I will get the part numbers off the dipped beam bulb at weekend, and check internet. I havnt got any high voltage stickers either, and the lighting quality on dipped beam is poor.
Cant see the embossed letters on the headlights either, so probably got standard candles !!
I have seen some HID kits on the net, I will convert them when I get time.
The LED markers should arrive this week, will check out other bulbs when I fit them
Thanks again for all the help Guys.

Marker LED's arrived today, fitted them, 5 mins of a job.
I'm well pleased, they look fantastic. Just ordered 50w H7 HIDS kit for dipped beam.
(Got them for 64 quid delivered from Hids direct.)
I thought I would treat the X to something, as I nearly parted company with her for a Audi A6 3.0 Quattro this week. The dealer offered me 7.5 K for mine ( cheeky Bar steward )
I'm glad he did now as the X has been a good car and have a set of winter tyres on for winter, should go where an A6 would struggle, if we get bad snow this year.
So im hanging on to her for a bit, I PXd the E60 3.0I fully loaded in against the X5 and got a crap deal on that too.

Hi, Ive never had to post a link before, i've cut and pasted the http line from the browser, but if it doesn't work there from HIDS Direct, E53. 00 - 004, H7 HID's , mine is a 55 plate, but other sites are saying H7's are suitable for all E53's. I'd wait until I fit them to confirm that though.
I went to HIDs direct because X5 sport pointed me in that direction, also Raj.

I was going to get the 35w hids, then noticed the 50's, only 15 quid extra, worth a try. Im only a few miles from you I guess. I will fit the bulbs when they come and if you are still unsure I will give you a demmo one evening, if i'm impressed with the improved lighting. I have found the standard fitment are woefull.
On a recent trip to the western Isles where street lights are scarce it was frightening on country roads, like driving in fog.

I cancelled my order via ebay. I rang HIDS Direct this morning and they said there were 2 kinds of bulbs for the E53  X5, as some headlights have a plastic bulb holder and some a metal clip, I am popping down to their place in the morning as they are only 20 minuites away, in Swinton Manchester.
I will go in with the bulb. He said on the phone that the cheaper one was not 100% canbus happy.
I may get some number plate bulbs at the same time, and interia, and dash LED's. What have I started !!!!
I have seen that others have done them and the pics look good.

Fair enough....my 54 plate has bulbs that are held in by a metal clip. When I got the kit they supplied revised metal clips (free) that had a split in them such that they would slip onto the cable leading out to the ballast

The new clips were useable but a bit weedy in guage so having a slot in them too in order to pass over the cable weakened them further. The clip on one side for no apparent reason was therefore trickier to get seated flat and not loose

Well I went to HIDS Direct this morning, picked up some 55W slimlines HIDS Conversion kits H7's
Drilled a 25 mm hole in the plastic at the side of the inspection cover with my holesaw, on each headlight, fitted the bulbs and pushed the cables through the drilled hole and then sealed the hole with the supplied grommet.
The Ballasts are very slim and come with a bracket with screws, that neatly fasten to a lug near the rear of the headlight.
Very neat and easy job to do. I hooked up my scanner and coded in DRL so the Marker lights, LED's, and the dipped beam 55w hids are on as daytime running lights.
Looks good during the daylight, will test them out on an unlit country road tonight.
I also picked up some LED number plate bulbs and fitted them, they didnt work at first, they have to be put in a certain way around, + and - , all done in less than an hour. Guy at HIDS said thet were flying out the door, very popular. I only paid 65 quid for Hids and numberplate bulbs, bargain. Totaly canbus error free too

Update.......
Tried out in the dark, on unlit country roads, I'm well impressed, lit up the road like it was daylight, also other cars didnt flash me to say I was dazzleing them,I was concerned about other drivers thinking I had my high beam on.  Thanks again for all the help and info provided by members. Cheers

Glad you're all sorted. HID kits are very straight forward as you found.

So which kit did you come away with in the end, both kits discussed before were 50w?
Did it need the metal clip too?

They seem to list this one @64.95...which cosmetically looks like my 35watt
http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/canbus-pro ... n-55w-kit/

and this one @57.95

When I called at HIDS Direct I asked for the 50w ones, he said the 55w slimline ones were better, and cheaper.
They charged me 52.95 I think, discounted over the counter, I paid 65.00 altogether with 2 rear numberplate
LED,s  they never gave me any metal clips, and there was none in the box.!
I had to use my old ones, but had to cut them with my sidecutters to enable me to slide them over the cables at the rear of the bulbs. apart from that all was well and they are 100% better than the OEM candles I had in
I changed the angel eyes marker lights to LED's as well, I may change my binnacle bulbs next, as they look smart when backlit with LED,s, I will have to find out what bulbs they are.
So back onto your original question the ones I purchased were the ones in your second link
