There are two types of ballasts available in the market. 1- direct current (DC) 2- alternating current (AC) ballast. Read the info below to see the difference

The kit that i got was an AC kit. As i mentioned previously my first set of 75W kit did the flickering which was a DC kit and had to order another set which was AC kit to fix the issue. It might have something to do the draw which might need the AC support to handle. The55W kit i mentioned above has compatibility between 9V-16V input.

Theory is sound.  What usually happens though is the regulator bumps up the alternator output to cover the extra load so there is no effect on added 'loads' on the overall system.  Not sure if the system is all on a 'common circuit' as the lighting controls are in the LCM.  A signal used to switch a relay direct off the battery terms up front should work so your fix should in theory work too.  Not sure what the resistors will have any effect.  They'll be pretty big I expect too as you have to cover the ballasts power draw.

As I see it the resistors would mimic being bulbs, one per side of course bridged across the car normal bulb 12v supply. That would take care of the error checks.  The drivers side 12v would be extended to the relay to do just that, switch the relay. The relay would take a dedicated 12v from an earth and the 12v jump point (fused) back to each of the ballasts...which would then each feed the hids

Those resistors listed appear to be what is the norm for this "mimic a bulb" job

I see that it has an input range from 9v-32v which is weird. What type of a vehicle runs on 32v? Train or airplane??
I know the lorries run on 24v but weird.

Indeed, although the harness and resistors are less than a tenner so it's not the end of the world. I live in chilly East Manchester too.

I think I need pro alignment for the lights too after its sorted, not sure how much that would be but pennies I hope. I might mess with the screws (2 to choose from I think) but I noticed that ended in tears for one FM :(

There are 2 adjuster wheels you can use to align the lights with.

I do have harnesses for light bulb out warning cancellation but i never had to use it for X5. I am not sure if that would help to regulate the input

Are you referring to those "inline cancellors" that actually have capacitor inside them?

I've tried them and it it made very little difference.

The power to the hids was still the same albiet passing on its way to the ballast. I did think these might smooth the supply out...and it may have done...a bit :'(

What I intend to do is demote the 12v that normally powers the HID Ballast to no more than relay switching duties. The "Power" to the ballast will come direct from the battery terminals via the other side of the relay, hopefull making it immune from engine running twitchyness
