If all the above tests fail keep a look out for the auxillary pump

Mine wouldn't go above the first tick even after the main stat had been replaced. The heat in the cabin was bobbins too

Turns out it was the aux (electrical) pump which IIRC is next to the rad on the smaller pipes going to the Webasto and Cabin

Car dead centre and cabin nice and toasty....

ps mine was without an EGR thermostat based on the year....and I looked as well...and there was none

Look here

Picture of EGR thermostat....but on my car...No parts found matching your car.

Whereas this shows the setup WTHOUT EGR

thanks for that, mine's also without thermostat.. (the bronze coloured pipe is the EGR jobbie)

Image

btw i tried to do the replacement and went half way - the blo0dy thermostat screws need a female torx set!!!  >:D had to give up for now! and ordered a female torx set!

another issue is the EGR valve can be fused to the exhaust manifold due to extreme heat. how do i take that off?

That looks just like my car....No EGR thermostat...just a link pipe
But...and I confess....my indy did the main thermostat....and later the aux pump
He may have left that link pipe alone to get at the main thermostat underneath?

Same as mine too , that link pipe has to come off  for ease of access to stat  which is just below , you can see the bottom hose connected to it , not easy got at with big hands . OH and dont drop anything . lol

That pic is strange to me.

I've had four different model cars with the six pot diesel, and none of them had that set up!
Currently :
2013 BMW E70 X5 40D MSport

Previously :
2008 BMW E92 335D MSport
2004 BMW E46 M3
2005 BMW E60 535D MSport
2002 BMW E39 530D Sport
The list goes on...

Any suggestions on how to remove it off the exhaust manifold. Just 2 Allen screws but pretty sure it's fused due to extreme heat!

I must admit it wasnt me who took it of BUT i was watching and holding the torch ( v important job ) allen or hex im not sure  but just seemed to come of no bother , getting the four bolts of the stat were tricky to get at , i could hear mumbling and some bad words used, then all hell broke loose when he droped a bolt down the front of the engine ,THEN the shit hit the fan when he discovered he had been sent the WRONG stat and had to put it all back together, will get correct stat on monday , up side is at least he got a practice run at it , lol

Below the correct operating temp the car stays in 'cold' program mode so it will be much smoother now.  Glad it's sorted, and if the weather forecast is anything to go by just in time too.... :cold:
