A quick glance showed the pipework leading to it but god knows how one gets ones hand in there from the top
Anyhow.....more investigations today being bloody cold garnered the following. 25 miles to work and it never got any further than half way between the blue and the first 1/3rd TICK. This is not good for the engine, my body temperature and fuel consumption.
Before setting off home I put some card board in front of the rad at the top (in front of the electric fan). True the air wasn't fully stopped getting to the rad as the lower grills on the facelift were open.
Not a brilliant response but it got beyond 1/3 rd though....but only just and definately not vertical. Interestingly I switched the engine off for 10 mins and then turned it on (not started)....the temp shot to almost vertical. Turning it over the gauge fell back to just over 1/3rd
Conclusions.....the pump works for sure and some air blocking gave an improvement if not brilliant. I have no Egr thermostat so if the water is circulating when it shouldn't be It must either be via an open main stat or some other spurious route. That other route could only be via the (broken webasto)
Given that when it was last repaired the webasto was in no better health and it did reach dead centre it must be the main stat :'(
edit....it also proved the temp gauge was working too
