E46, With the ignition off, you hold the trip reset button in then turn the ignition on whilst keeping the button pressed. After about 5 seconds, the display will read 'test'. Release the reset button and then use the same button to cycle through the options.
If you want, I will have a look tomorrow and let you know the address for the battery voltage for the E46,

sounds similair to the you tube vid I saw
