BMW's cars are independently tested for fuel consumption, using this procedure: http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/inform ... scheme.asp

The main thing to note is that this test is performed on a rolling road at 20C ! This is why you'll never be able to reproduce the figures.
Sure you didn't pop on your lead wellies from time to time Jalf?!! Can't see anyone with a car like yours just pootling along!? Does seem wrong though that a manufacturer can publish such misleading figures, so I assume it's not regulated and you have to rely on the honesty of different manufacturers. It'd be interesting to know what the car's capable at a steady 60, but don't see anyone on this forum having the patience for that - I know I wouldn't - I'd lose patience after a few mins and give it the beans!!
I have been known to pootle :D
OK, just did a run of motorway and town driving (roughly 70/30 split)

436 miles

74.71 Lires = 16.43 Gallons

436/16.43 = 26.53 MPG

Not that good really...............
Thats approx how much I'm getting on my 35d.

If these are the best we are getting it is poor considering the figures on paper from BMW.

Absolutely, is there anyway we can complain or write to BMW we are mislead with their quoted figures. It might help if there are more than just 2 people. JASON hasnt got back to us yet after starting to this thread. hope he is working on improving mpg. The reaso x5 tipped for me against range rover/q7 is its mileage apart from it being bmw. anyway thats me

sorry ive been away on bisness for a week, got back late sat and ive been snowed under with work

right i have done a good few e70 3.0d with more power and mpg,i just did perrykhan e70 3.0d about a week and a bit ago so will find out more when he post

it seems the 3.0sd(35d as some call them) and the 4.0d are the problem cars with very poor crap mpg

now i know this is a big problem as im getting calls every week asking have i done the extra mpg thing and what extra are they doing

i have about 10 diffent ways to tune these to try and get max more mpg or power and mpg but need the cars here to test so if there is anyone local that would like us to try on there car,

(avtar wifes e46 330i convert is doing 30-33mpg on the motorway with our tuned maps on it)

@avtra i ready have the read from you 3.0sd and it would be a case of me just making and adjusting the maps each time, all the work will be done over the obd socket on your car so no one ever know as i can flash back to standard crap bad mpg file any time and as you are around the corner it would be ideal to use your car and the feed back would be great

we did a eco test today on a 2008 e70 3.0sd(35d) at 50mph it was showing 37-39mpg on the gauge after the 1st eco mod file

this car will now be going on a long run for further testing and they will report back after 300-400ish mile run with brim to brim fill up

we now have the xconsole obd flasher which we can send out for xdrives to read and flash write there own cars and keep then keep the flasher to change between maps any time
viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1634

Or

The obd flasher pro for the low cost remapping option where you just pay for the forum remap price and send the obd flasher pro back after you have wrote the mod remap to your car
I've got more power and about average MPG, I'd like both but I'm no where near you for the tests :( I'll be interested in seeing what you find.
We have our own flasher switch tool for custmers to use to remap there cars so you don't have to drive to us

Just did a 200 mile round-trip (5 up) in our new x30d (400 miles on the clock) .. mixture of A/B roads cross country. Did a respectable 36.7mpg, according to the computer!

I've got the 40d, and have done c1500 miles. A mixture of round town and long trips, and am getting mid 20s .... I haven't opened it up much yet, as looking to run in properly, so goodness knows where that will go when I do ! I do like the performance but it does seem the BMW figures are misleading - are these figures not audited / tested to make sure they're not being made up / obtained under unrealistic circumstances ?

My 35d has 25000 km on it now an is doing a shade over 30 mpg imperial on teh computer. Most driving is a mix of motorway at around 70mph or local town stuff. This car is not driven aggressively - after all I'm in Canada - life - and especially driving - is more relaxed here. More stop lights than moose.

Mine is a 40d on 20" jetsers (275 front/315 rear).
I have been driving for 500 km over the weekend in Belgium and the Netherlands, mostly highways (90%), driving while using the dynamic CC set at max permitted speeds (mostly 120 km/h). I managed to average at 8.7 l/100km which is around 32.5 imperial mpg ...
I have noticed the car started to drink a LOT less after pasing the 15.000 km mark ... while new I never would have averaged this low ...

Quite chuffed to see that I got 31mpg on a 100 mile journey yesterday on my 40d (according to the trip computer) - mixture of country and A roads plus motorway then heavy traffic into town. Wasn't going particularly slow or fast but gave it the beans a few times when pulling away, just for fun. Having said that, I've been warned that trip computers usually over estimate the economy ... I'll have to compare it to measuring mileage over fuel consumed.

Had a complete software update about a 2 months ago and have been doing regular trips between Londona and Knutsford (400 mile round trip) add to this some town travelling and on the motorway probably averaging 80-85 MPH. Calculated mileage based upon number of litres used, mileage covered, etc and it is working out about 30-31 MPG.

Hi Jason,

I tried emailing you last week but didn't hear back so thought I'd try here. I'm interested in your improvements for my 2008 3.0d SE X5 that I picked up a couple of days ago. Can you tell me what kind of improvements the latest chips are now getting approximately?

Thanks!
