I know it's a topic that's been covered many times but I can't find an answer to my query.....

I have a facelift 2004 3.0d with the 'tin/steel' manifold. After having a search on the well known auction site I found this.....

Just thought I'd give an update on this......

Attempted to fit the new manifold today, I didn't even get all the necessary components stripped out! Got to the injectors, 1 came out the rest were seized. Needless to say I threw in the towel after attempting to remove them. So Ive booked the car in with my local indie who says he never takes all the top end stuff off anyway, he does it from underneath hence why BMW give it a book time of 3.6 hours! I really would of liked to have competed the job myself but there was no way I was going to risk damaging the injectors.

One issue I did find though which was weird, every right hand injector nut was loose!

Hopefully get the car back Tuesday night without the awful smell in the cabin anymore!

did it go ok in the end? Im looking to order this part and would like to know if it came with all the necessary gasket/seals and nothing needed modifying to fit?

Yes all went well. The part from eBay was a perfect fit & came with manifold to head gaskets, manifold to turbo gasket & all manifold bolts. No modifications required. All in at £156.00, the seller even offers a COD service where you pay the courier.

As an FYI, I sourced this very same kit last year.  Superb unit and great value for money @ £121 + £9 shipping (its heavy!).  I think mine was supplied by a different eBay seller.  Very courteous when I had questions.

My Indy fitted for £180.

From what I recall, BMW wanted £350 for supply of the manifold.

Where previous car was "whining" under acceleration and also had a significant drop in power (and corresponding increase in fuel consumption).  This was an instant fix and seeminlgy tightened up the responsiveness on an engine that had done 115K miles at the time.
It's a very common problem based on the bad design of the original unit.

Also, if self fitting, be aware it is very easy to damage an injector and they are expensive to replace (~£150 + fitting per).

I've noticed that some folk say it can be done from underneath rather from the top end but I cant quite visualise how - surely if it was that simple everyone would do it from underneath?

Can someone explain please?

I think it's easier if one has ramps, laying on your back on a cold wet floor with barely enough room to bend your elbows isn't my cup of tea. Having a comfortable workshop & all the right tools probably makes a big difference.

well thats what I thought, but most if not all Indy's have ramps yet several posters in other posters have used the phrase "Some Indy's are doing the manifold from underneath now" - which suggests to em that previously, whether they had ramps or not , they were doing it from the top and not underneath so I don't understand why they're doing it 'now' and what dd they do before?
