Speedo cluster change

Hi all,
I need to replace my speedo cluster instrument in my E53 X5 3.0d due to the pixels messing up but also the fuel gauge and computer playing up. question is, can I replace it with a cluster from a 5series petrol model or must I have a diesel cluster. they only difference I can see is the diesel cluster tells you what fuel type it is under the gauge.
cheers
Wardy

You may be better sending yours for repair.
Pixels way to sort (if you are that way inclined)
Fuel gauge may be sender issues.
Silly question..
When was the last time you disconnected the battery ?

I've had it for a year and never disconnected it however the battery did die last weekend but we jump started it and managed to take care of that problem.
I can send it to get the pixels replaced or even do it myself.
The reason I ask about the replacement is yesterday i was driving it and approx. 30mph and it just lost all power. oil and battery light came and the power steering had gone too. managed to push the car into a aide road and turn it over but it would start. the fuel 'Range' on the speedometer computer display said '47 mls', the fuel light hadn't come on however after managing to get to a petrol station with getting 5Ltre jerry can of fuel it turned over and started. got the car to thr petrol station and filled it up... very odd!

As all things X5 they are temperamental and very sensitive to voltage issues.
My dash lost fuel gauge and trip computer due to some numpty, who will remain me, plugging it back in with the ignition on....
Disconnected battery for 30 secs then back on and all returned.
If nothing else it is a free thing to at least try...

ouch... ok thanks, I will certainly give it a try.
I have been told I cannot replace my cluster with one that has come out of petrol model due to rev range which I thought would be the case.

There is also a coding issue me thinks.
Mileage and VIN stored in more than one place.
If you don't get it right you could brick the dash and or get that nice little tamper dot pop up..
All in all probably better to get yours sorted.

Correct, and as said, the tamper dot will trip. There's a fella down south who has a good reputation for cluster repairs, will try and dig his details out.

Get the battery off first, then if it occurs again, replace the battery first (is it 5 years old, plus).
The tamper dot appeared on mine too. I've NEVER tampered with mine. Turned out to be a 6 day no starting of the car. It needs a good battery that will hold it's charge.
Best of luck and keep us informed.
