Passenger door mirror

My N/S door mirror (non power fold) functions fine on the drivers door button, in both planes. However, in reverse it tends to 'twitch', initially going down, then partly back up, down again, repeating this a couple of times. Sometimes it ends up in the correct 'view kerb' position, sometimes not.

Last weekend, I stripped the mechanism completely down to the motors and gears. I checked all the gears under a high power magnifier, expecting to find some damage, but all was fine. Only the central pivot at  the rear of the mirror mounting required a clean and re-grease. The conducting tracks inside seemed ok and there were 2 small wipers contacts present, one on each adjustment arm. Obviously I have missed something - anyone give me a pointer please?

Thank you both and especially Jason for the link-that is exactly what I required. Glad I don't have to remove the door card...

Question,

Is the passenger door mirror supposed to always lower when reversing so as to see the kerb to park ?

Mine has never done this, so, is it only a feature of Petrol models or M-series vehicles, or is there a way to switch the feature ON ?

Regards

It should do, but mine had to be programmed to do it by the Dealer when new and needs the mirror switch to be set to the driver's side.

I did have a problem with it when the car was about two years old and the mirror unit was replaced under warranty.

Did this job today - quite easy now I know how. There was definitely grease on the wiper contacts. Worked ok on test, we'll see how it goes this week. Thanks again
