Hi all
If i have Data Roaming turned off on my Iphone 3gs and access the internet only via the wifi on the phone, when i am abroad in Norway. Will i get charged by my phone company ( O2 ) for the amount of time i use the internet or am i correct in thinking that this is free.
I have a very good wireless broadband ( fibre optic ) connection in my flat in Norway which is provided as part of my rent. I have a laptop in the flat but sometimes i am just too lazy to get up off the couch

Does that make sense

You are correct, if you have data roaming turned off the iphone will not try to connect to data using 3G/GPRS but WI-FI will still work. I have done it in USA / South Africa without any problem at all.

Yeap no extra charge. Can't remember but iPhone 4 has another switch under settings -- network either called mobile data or cellular data turn that off and all data via provider is cut off.

I was wondering about this too as there have recently in the press and on the news been articles / reports of people getting HUGE bills for data even though they had turned data roaming off.

Reason i asked is I recently upgraded my OS to Ios4 via itunes and once the upgrade was complete it turned data roaming on automatically and added the cellular data switch into the menu , it wasn't there before the upgrade, and this was also turned on. The next day i received a text from O2 stating i had used over £30 of data even though i hadn't been on the internet. The phone must have been connecting automatically. I called O2 and complained and give them credit they waved this charge at this time. I now have everything turned off.

If you want to be ultra safe delete the mobile/cellular data settings and if you sync do not accept carrier updates if you do delete the settings again:
When you want it back there a reset network settings at the bottom of the same page.

There have, yes, but I really don't believe they had it turned off. Likely, as was suggested above, they received (and accepted) a carrier update or OS update to their phone and got stung that way.

Mainland Europe is way ahead of us in that respect.
First of all, there are NO roaming charges anywhere in Europe for a European phone (i.e. the cost to make a call is the same in any country, the cost of receiving a call is zero).
Secondly, I read yesterday whilst in NL that there is now a data roaming cap of 50 Euro a month as well, so no matter what you do you will never get a bill greater then 50 Euro.
I will have to investigate getting a Dutch SIM as the UK was part of the Vodaphone European limit where you will not get charged more then the standard Dutch tarifs.

I currently have Cellular Data switched on and Data Roaming switched off. I have decided as a test to reset my Usage Counters and i'll check again tomorrow if they change (they shouldn't hopefully). I am in Kazakhstan at the moment and I think Data is about £6/MB - Gulp!
I'll let you know tomorrow what the score is!

I think thats what i had done on mine. I never used the ineternet or went online with the phone and in the space of less than 24 hours i had used just over £30 in data charges. I think the phone must go online in the background

so to speak without the user knowing thus unexpected high bills. Why the phone does this i don't know.
Turks... I would keep a close eye on it

The 50 Euro cap is definetly true for vodafone, just been out there in a few countries and I got the text for the cap, however you just sent a reply and it allows you to exceed the cap if you wish too. Don't know about other networks.

Nothing more on the usage almost a day later... but then my phone hasn't seen any action either, no voicemails or picture messages from the missus!
I'll leave it on for another day I think!
