3.0i and 3.0d same starter motor issues

Hi there,

just wondering whether the 3.0i and 3.0d share the same magneti marelli starter motor which breaks down and causes massive amp pull during start up. I am going to look at a 3.0i which has been left for a number of weeks and has suffered battery drain.

Don’t know whether I will be looking at just an worn out old battery or parasitic drain. I will attempt to jump it with another same sized battery to see if it starts.

If left more than a month then the alarm will kill the battery.

If battery older than 5 years then suspect

Yes they have the same starter :cry1:

Just changed one on an E46.  Denso/Magnetti-Marelli unit swapped out for a remanufactured Bosch.

If you can borrow a current clamp (1500A range would be good) and put it over the +ve battery cable in the boot, zero it, and crank the starter you will very quickly prove the starter.  Spec (on the label) is 185A.  Mine was 540A!

Eurocarparts sell the starter with a refundable surcharge.  The starter is about £120 and the surcharge £108.  It's a pig of a job (awkward to get at) to do but is a DIY if you have the time and tools.
