Starting Problems

Hi this is a bit of a long shot but I have a problem which I've been unable to fix I have a Range Rover L322 4.4 Petrol 2003 (Basically a BMW X5 E53 4.4 with the BMW M62 engine and gearbox)

I've been having a few starting problems , IE go to start, it turns over then stops a bit like the starter motor is on its way out, however its a new starter as the old one was doing the same thing, changed it but still same problems.

Had the error codes cleared then it happened again and had the code read again with a BMW scanner and this is what I got [140 8C, 062 3E, 051 33] Had a look at the BMW forums and was pointing to the CRANK SHAFT SENSOR (Not to be confused with cam shaft sensor).

Ordered a new Land rover part NSC000050 (BMW 12 14 1 433 264) fitted it including rubber o ring and started it up but got a ticking sound like a bad tappet. Turned engine off checked error codes NONE showing so reset adaptive in case ECU was compensating for old crank sensor.

Started it up still ticking/tappet sound. Pulled out Crank sensor and the edge was worn away on metal end. Refitted old sensor, car wont start takes 6-10 times for it to start, changed back to new sensor 6-10 times to start it and now throwing up loads of errors on both old and new sensors [140 8C, 033 21, 062 3E, 051 33, 111 6F, 112 70]. Cleared down errors but it wont let me clear [140 8C, 033 21]. No matter what sensor I use it takes 6-10 times to start it then runs perfectly.

Any Ideas?

Problem solved....

In the end it was several problems…

The crank shaft sensor can have an o-ring or a metal spacer or both. This is to achieve the specific “air gap”, so new crank shaft sensor, o-ring and metal spacer.

The other part of the problem was the plug that connects to the sensor. Checked the plug for a loose connection or corrosion and everything checked out, however whilst looking at the plug at some point in its life it’s had a new plug put on it.

Checked the wiring diagram and the two wires had been reversed in the plug. The car was running even though the wires were reversed. Fixed wiring, cleared down errors and its running 100%, starts first time and no errors showing.

BMW part numbers:-

12 52 1 427 221 - Plug Housing

12 52 1 427 608 - Pins for Plug Housing

12 14 1 742 693 - Metal Spacer

Just a note this was the only plug housing I could find, it has a key way in the middle but the crank shaft sensor has a key way off center, so hot soldering iron and new key way made in plug housing.
