After my X5 (3.0d 2005) broke down last week with a destroyed front diff, I decided to purchase a new one from BMW to be fitted by my usual garage (Total cost £1660).
I now have another issue.
When the steering is at full lock and I move either forwards or reverse there is a rumble/juddering.
My garage says it may be the transfer box but thought I'd check here for advice / solutions and to see if anyone else has had the same issue?
I didn't have this before the diff gave in and my usual garage has rechecked the diff oil etc.

Is it the correct diff ie with the same ratio?

The garage checked the ratio with the diff that came off the car and with BMW when they ordered it... that isn't to say it is the correct one.. I think it was the 3.91 ratio they ordered.. Any further advice / thoughts?

Steamyrotter - is there any other advice why you think it may be the cv joint?.. I not mechanical so have no idea what this is...

It's just that you said on full lock which is where the front CV joints are on maximum flex.
As they transmit all the power to the front wheels.

They would have to removed them to change the diff and if  they were worn it wouldn't help.

They are notorious for being pains to get back in the wheel hub and some 'persuassion' may have been applied???
(I don't know who or how they were fitted so am only posting suggestion not allegation)

Are you saying they may not be fitted correctly or could have been possibly damaged in the re-fitting?
I will call the garage tomorrow and book it in again..
I've also been doing some research and other suggestions are:

• Change the diff fluid - however as this is new I'm not sure it will do anything. The garage did have it back the day after and checked the levels.
  • Replace transfer case fluid..?
    • Replace transmission fluid..?
      • Front wheel alignment..?
      I will complete the post after the garage have assessed again.

Not saying that as fact, Just a suggestion that it may be a factor...

I have had my front and rear hubs off a few times and it is an absolute nightmare gettting the drive shaft splines back in properly, previously resorting to many hundred light taps on the back to try to edge them in enough to get the hub nut back on..

The last time I tapped a 6mm hole in the end of the shaft (approx 3-4mm deep) and used a bolt to grip on to.. Soooooo much easier.
its surprising they dont add a threaded hole in the end to allow you to get some grip on them.

Steamyrotter: Different shaft for face lift x5. J9MMO: I'm a transfer box specialist. Most of the time, Damaged front diff will damage transfer box. Quick check: pull fuse 46 (transfer box).

I was referring to the 2 drive shafts from front diff to wheels.

Ooo, so you referring to front shaft not front drive shaft...
