Got my bmw scanner today, I have set auto locking on it, When you turn the x5 off and take the key out, the doors still stay locked. Is this normal?

If you mean you have set it to auto lock the doors when travelling over 15mph which is what mine does and is annoying as hell, then i don't think it will automatically open them again when switching of ignition, well mine doesn't.

Need to press the unlock button on centre console or do a double pull on the door handle to unlock then open.

I activated mine with the scanner140, when I had the X5. I think I had to press the button, or double pull the door catch too.
On the 3 series I've got now it auto unlocks when ignition is turned off. I've got the Carley app for this one and that has the option to auto unlock too, but as seen in the scanner tutorial I've attached there is no tick box for auto unlock

Auto unlocking option is not available on Carley app for E53 either.

The E53 only had auto lock if I remember correctly.  The E70/71 unlocked the driver's door when the key was removed.  The other doors remain locked.

It always seemed strange that other manufacturers included auto-unlocking back then, but not BMW!

If you have an Intravee, with the latest firmware, you can set auto lock and unlock. The lock is at about 5 mph and the unlock can be set at a number of things. I used to have mine set to "auto box to park". I believe there was an option to have unlock when key removed, as well.
