actually im not swearing (yet!!), but looking for info on purging the air out of the fuel system after just changing my diesel fuel filter. i did the job 6 years ago and cant remember any problems that time, but this time the engine is cranking over much longer to start. i thought this system auto bled but it doesnt seem to be doing it so far. ive had the car on a short run but still cranks over for ages before starting. any ideas anyone? :'(

It should self-purge.  Is there a non-return valve that has failed?

Don't know. Wouldn't know where to look for one. Maybe a high speed blast might force the air out.  ..

Maybe it hasn't sealed properly on the pipe clips when ypu ditted the new filter and maybe still drawing air in.
Though the electric pump usually primes the system / high pressure pump when you unlock the vehicle.

It's getting better. I'm only driving around town at moment. Perhaps a good motorway blast will finally purge all the air out.

Not sure how easy it is to do, but can you release the fuel line under the bonnet and let the pump force everything through?  It might work, and you don't need the engine running.

Only a suggestion.  BMW may of course gave used 'one time only' clamps that mean it can't be done  >:(

just to tidy this one up, i gave the car a good run and its now back to starting after about the 3rd turn of the starter, where it always did, so hopefully its sorted itself out now. thanks for the suggestions.
