I changed the final stage resistor today and noticed a wire not plugged into anything

if it was found in the area around the fsr it might be from one of the servos that open/close the vents.
try operating the buttons on the heater panel that direct air up/down etc and you should see/hear the servos working or not.

It's under the steering column, won't reach over to the fsr.

If you dont have an paddle shift, its not plugged in...

Oh ok so the wires are still fitted then even in vehicles with no paddle shift? :-[

There are only a few loom variants so it's common to find plugs that aren't in use. Very useful for doing later upgrades

Well I don't want to ginx it but this is my 3rd X5 & I've had it for 2 & 1/2 years now. It's been a bloody brilliant motor! Fingers crossed it continues to be!
