Auxillary Heating

Post by kanewesley » Sat Feb 25, 2017 5:18 pm

Hello....I've had my X5 almost a year and after initial apprehension, am so pleased with it  :)

It is a 2006 model 3.0 D
Someone recently enlightened me as to the "aux. heating" which is available for these cold mornings.
Eagerly, I programmed it to come on as I hate getting into a freezing car and ice cold leather seats at 5:00am.
The little red icon came on to tell me it was all programmed up for 4:30am.

How warm should the car be???
Ive tried it twice and the car dont seem any warmer than normal?

Thanks !

What options are on your car?  Is Aux heating enabled and you have the little Webasto remote control?

Is your Webasto unit actually working?  If it is then on cold mornings you will hear a gentle ticking from under the left front and a gentle roaring noise from the unit once fired up.  If neither are happening then your unit may be suspect.  It normally operates only if the air temp is <5°C

If it says something like Aux ventilation then that is to cool the car on a hot day (blows the hot air out).

Aux Heating only runs if you have enough battery charge and fuel on board.  The system has a self protect mode so the engine can start.

Can't help with operation question, but wonder how one would tell if the car has aux heating? Spotted a small exhaust on left underside today, and have a Webasto unit under the hood, but no remote that x5sport mentioned.. screen says aux ventilation, but can't recall seeing aux heating?
2005 (55 plate) x5 3.0d sport, auto trans, nav tv thingy, but no dsp.

Under a turbo swap presently (fingers crossed it fixes her!)

All diesel E53 have the unit and 'Aux Ventilation'.

Aux Heating was an add-on with a plug in control module into the boot and a radio fob to turn it on/off with.

You can diy a solution and there is a (very) long thread on the E53 area detailing lots of options to use along with things you must not do when setting it up.

The OEM system fitted a Webasto Telestart module.  They can still be found on line occasionally.  I think it is the T70/80/90 that work.  Module was plug and play but ISTR that coding was needed for the timer controlled operation.

I cant say definitively how warm the car should be but to put it into perspective it's warm enough to defrost an iced up windscreen by the time its run its cycle. I wouldnt say it is piping hot but it noticeably takes the chill off

Right,.....on the screen display I have "auxillary ventillation" but no auxillary heating category?

I dont have any kind of remote control?????

I have read since that it may need "switching on" with BMW software, but then I still have no remote?

If I manage to switch it on, why cant it be set from the screen display like the aux. ventillation option?

Why does it need a remote control?

Thanks

....and just looked under the bonnet and there is a unit which says WEBASTO THERMO TOP Z.

Does Z mean it is a heating unit? :noexpression:

It doesn't need a remote control (the previous post was misleading but not untrue) The remote is for the dozy/lazy gits who forgot  to set the timer the night before. I don't have a remote, I set it off the dash the night before, works fine.

Ok, so because it is greyed out on the screen this means it needs activated with 1.40.O scanner or similar. Depending where you are located another member may be able to do ti for you.
Once it is activated you will be abel to set it from the screen

Its not greyed out on the csreen....it's not there !!

There is a blank space on the on screen menu lising under auxillary ventillation.

Greyed out / Blank is same thing...

The Aux heating was not a standard option for E53 in the European markets and as such a dealer will not (most likely) enable it for you.

The 1.4.0 scanner should give you the option to enable it.
I had to revert to DIS to install that "unit" on mine even though it was just a setting change.

That will then give you the Aux Heat option which you can then trigger using a timer.
The Telestart will give you the option to start remotely but is not essential.
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

DIS is what the dealer used to use.
They have upgraded to something else now..

I cannot assist on the 1.4.0 as i never had one,

and don't have the E53 either!  :(

I did it with the 1.40.0 scanner. Im sorry I cannot remember how to do it, but I do remember that I basically went in and out of each of the screens til I found it and then worked it out/enabled it. It wasn't difficult. You don't need TIS or DIS or anything else. One click and that was it.
Tinker around, you'll work out it. I did and Im a technophobe !

might be better to start a new post with the hiding "INPA assistance" and those with INPA may step forward whereas they may not read a post titled Auxiliary Heating
