headlamp restoration

I thought I'd posted this about a week or so ago and then couldn't find my own post so here goes. Im planning to have a go at restoring the foggy/yellowy/cloudy appearance on my 2004 E53 3.0 D Auto X5. the kit Ive bought has 1200 grit 1500 grit etc through to 3000 (but I also have some 5000 grit of my own). In understand the principle of starting off at 1200 and working up to 3000 or higher, and i understand the whole job may take an hour or more each side, but who long do I give it on each grit grading before moving on the the next higher grade?
Louis tell me that the rougher grit should be used until all the fogginess/yellowish finish has been removed and then use the higher grades to polish out, but then equally the rougher grades may create a matt finish of their own before polishing out, so how long on each grade? I don't want to spend ten mins on each one to find I should have down fifteen mins and have to go back through the whole process again.
Any tips or help would be much appreciated
