On past vehicles, I've had great results from eliminating the EGR, followed by a clean (like terraclean).  In fact I've been truly shocked at how much crap has needed to be cleaned out that results from the EGR process.

On one, it totally resolved a recurring limp mode issue, as well as a much smoother and stronger response. I've ended up viewing EGR bypass as a positive thing.

Every vehicle is different though, so what's the view here on doing this on the E53 3.0d?  Is this a popular route to go down?  Any particular challenges?

Mines a 53 plate pre-facelift model.  It's been remapped already, and is a super drive - I'm not looking for performance gains, its more I just like the idea of stopping all that crap being chucked back in.

So, have many done this?  any recommendations welcome!

I don't I can remember doing a egr delete on the X5.

However on the earlier cars the crankcase breather gets blocked as paper type more easily and a lot of members replace it with the face lift version which helps the car. See realoem for the parts.

You can just remove the vacuum control pipe from the EGR valve and plug off the pipe with a golf tee.
The valve will then no longer open.

+1 for the golf tee.
I don't get any more black smoke none at all now when i give it some heavy pedal.

have seen this before mentioned, 
what does the valve do and why do many blank it off,  what would i benefit ?

It recycles exhaust gas by burning it again.
Put's loads of soot back into your engine.
If you stop the egr working then you stop it putting burned diesel gas back in.
Simplest way i can think of to say what the egr does.(somebody will give a proper answer soon).

Very well put

When i put new vacuum pipes on mine i put one extra sort of.
I have the golf tee in but i also have a vacuum pipe on the egr that looks like it is connected but just runs under the intake and the end is out of sight.
The pipe that should go to the egr is plugged with the golf tee and well out of sight.
The mot tester i use looks for things so i don't let him find them lol.

This is a video showing how to fit the aftermarket EGR bypass, or simply remove the small vacuum hose and push a golf tee into the rubber hose to prevent vacuum loss.
Ideally remove the EGR valve and clean it out with carb cleaner if desired, especially if you are having running / stalling or limp mode issues.
Note, my EGR valve was held on with caphead allan bolts, a bit of a faff getting them in and out. VERY easy to drop the bolts, a magnetic ball end Allan key would be the business. So be careful.
But as said before if you aren't confident in removing it to clean it out, just remove the large intercooler pipe and look in that way to see how clogged it is inside. If it's ok just refit the aftercooler pipe and plug off the small vacuum hose.

so do you pull the pipe from the egr valve  where it comes from the engine ?  and stick the tee in there/  so the inlet to the egr  is just  open

Yes

right  think i understand now.  so its for the atmosphere to benefit from less gas in th eozone layer,  it does nothing for the engine but pollute it

Correct.
Not a golf tee but gives you the idea.
You don't have to blank the metal pipe as in the pic someone going overboard (not my pic).
