Mystery undercarriage part - subframe/rad mount?!

I know this is difficult without a photo but here goes, I know there's plenty of folk on here had their car in bits so I'm hoping you might know!

When you remove the splash guards, right at the front directly under the radiator is a tubular c. 1" in diameter metal piece of frame that is as wide as the rad, and then both ends curve back towards the rear of the car for about 6 inches, the ends of the tube seem to line up with hollow ends of the front subframe but are not attached in any way.

It's very rusty, can't see it in the front axle/sub frame pictures on real OEM, doesn't appear to have anything attached to it in terms of suspension.

Any ideas?

You know, I think it does, you sir win genius uber geek of the week! :D now to find out how much Cotswold BMW want for one! How the feck does that fit into the "vehicle trim" section!! Bloody nutters. No wonder I couldn't find it. Doesn't look like it does anything really but I can't stand the idea of this rusty old bit of scrap iron dangling around under there, just discovered it today changing drive belts and starter motor. If it's too pricey it might have to wait though, new Diamaris going on tomorrow and I need to save some money for the really important Dynavin upgrade, been a busy couple of weeks of new ownership

As it doesn't do much, remove, clean it up and paint it. Save buying another for 50-80 quid?

It was rusted through, beyond tarting up, might be back in that area over winter so I'll probably change it out then
