Doing the towbar today and was very surprised at how much rust there was between the heat shielding and bottom of the corner areas in the boot. Car bodywork seems good apart from the rear subframe, very rusty as well.

Don't know your year of manufacture, but I'm 54 and can remember when rust was compulsory on all cars over 12 months old.
I nearly bought an Alfa Sud back in the day which had more holes in it than your average Swiss cheese

Back in the day I did buy a new Alfa sud, so I know all about rust, watched it disintegrate in front of my eyes over an 18 month period. Think I'll clean this up and maybe space it by 2/3mm when I fit it back on so it can't trap water.

Looks like something has penetrated the coating and wicked along. Wire brush and a squirt of Waxoyl should take care of it unless being above the exhaust in needs more?
I remember the Alfa Sud too. They always went quicker as they got older due to losing weight.....

I bought a new Renault 18 in 1981. Within 18 months the front wing rusted through to a hole. I bunged it up with filler touched it up to look like a large stone chip, and traded it in to the same dealer The newer car, same model, survived a whole 2 years without signs of rust!!
