My '05 E53 X5 is in dire need of a head unit upgrade. I have been told that I need to know whether the head unit powers the speakers directly or via an amplifier. I have no idea which and would be grateful for any info.
If it is powered by an amp where do I find ?

Depends upon the kit installed now.  If you have sat Nav then you have a boot mounted BM54 Amplifier down by the battery (under the boot floor).

I’m not far from you, really interested in this upgrade as I’ve got the single slot cd and basic business radio.

Any picks after it’s done would be appreciated, plus who you used and if you rate them.
