E53 4.8 Windscreen replacement

Hi - has anyone had their windscreen replaced by autoglass or similar? I’ve got two large chips/mini cracks within 4 inches of each other on the windscreen, and apparently this means it can’t be repaired... autoglass are booked to replace it, but I wanted to check on others experience? Any need to ensure I get a special screen (It looks like mine is factory tinted???) - and also that the rain sensor for the wipers will function correctly afterwards?
Seem to recall there was a detailed thread on one of the m3 forums (m3cutters) re doing this on an M3 - but grateful if anyone on here can share their experience with an X5...
Many thanks!

Autoglass tried to change mine back in 2005 and turned up with the wrong screen. They also could not get the infra red protection version.
Worth checking your build config against your VIN to make certain that they have the correct screen. They do come with the auto lights sensor mount in place, but there are two versions.
Make sure they can provide the right screen, and when they turn up it is the right screen before they start removing the broken one - unlike mine when they realised it was the wrong one only after cutting the old one out!
Mine were replaced by BMW as the car was under warranty. Insurers coughed up £700 on both occasions.

Thanks for this. What’s the infra red protection about? And how do I check the screen with my VIN - not sure vin decoder works anymore? Many thanks!

bmwvin dot com still works as long as you don’t use an Ad blocker.
Mine had option ‘S358A Climate comfort windscreen’ which has a metallic tint in certain light and cuts down infra red (heat) radiation getting through.
