Anyone ever removed the roof rails or can offer any advice on doing so

Yes iv'e had mine off for a few coats of satin black, very easy to get off  its only 6 of them spline or hex bolt things .
be careful with the rubber gaskets when you put the rails back on  make sure they are seated properly .

How did you prep them before the satin black? Henry, sorry for hijacking

Took them off    then lots of degreaser  a good going over with a scuff pad    prewipe / primer / satin black
job done ..

You make it sound so simples
