BMW X3 2010 F25 DRIVETRAIN FAULT

Hope someone can shed some light on a problem we have been experiencing over the last couple month, it all started with an warning message on the I drive stating "Drive train fault drive moderately and take to local service centre, that's when the strange noise starts, I can only describe it as like something metallic toughing intermittently and a squealing sound this can stay for a couple of miles then stop and all is fine again.

there is no pattern to it and it can go several days without anything and start again

the car has been into two garages, one a BMW specialist and the only code they can relate this fault to is D02D58 Signal Wheel torque powertrain invalid transmitter DME but they don't know what is creating this code.

the car is running on 225/60/17 Pirelli star rated tyres all round and same tread depths.

I recently had every warning light come on, ABS, 4X4, air bag failure, DCS failure, brake failure, tyre pressure system failure, the list goes on, also went into limp mode ! and my power steering went heavy!

took it into the BMW specialist and they diagnosed a failed wheel sensor which was replaced and cured is problem but the drivetrain issue is still there, any advise/help would be much appreciatedĀ  :(

Hi thanks for getting back to me, when the car was in the garage they did a full diagnostic and it didn't identify any issues with the transfer box/gearbox only that code?

I know the earlier X3 suffered problem's with transfer box issues especially when using wrong tyres and with off set tyres but I don't know of issues with the F25.

the problem I have is not always there I can drive sometimes 150miles and nothing and other times a couple of hundred yards and it starts very strange.

If kkx5 says it is the transfer box then that is what it is.
We are lucky enough to have a resident " expert'' on the forum, I would trust what he says.

Thanks guy's I appreasiated you get back to me, however how can I get this confirmed as a replacement/repaired transfer box is not cheap and to replace it with out knowing 100% is a major expense, I'm more than happy to replace it if I know this is the problem, my local BMW specialist really does not have any idea what it is.

Any one know why it does this so randomly, I have done over 170miles this weekend and nothing then all of a sudden it started again making that noise went on for about 30miles then stopped again? combined with "drivetrain fault drive moderately on the I drive
