CV gaiter split

Hi guys

Car failed MOT at end of June as offside front CV joint gaiter split. It went to BMW and was completed under AUC which is now expired. Noticed grease on wheel on nearside front and was told it was the gaiter that is spli on this side now. BMW quoting £302. Is that a good price as how much difference would I be looking at with an independent?

How long ago did the other side split? As was mentioned, they normally replace in pairs though and if it failed an MOT a few weeks back I would have thought the other side would have gone by then as well.

Did you talk to them about the AUC cover for that one as it should have been done?

Yes I would second that, they obviously did a quick job and hoped the other gaitor would see the warrantee out.
Find a good independent who should do the job for half the price.
It is usually the wheel end gaitor that goes, the inner hardly ever fails as it operates in the one plane only.
i.e.doesnt twist as well as turns.

Have just spoken to the local garage people and apparently the Gaitor kits are sold individually but they would generally replace all 4 at the same time. Does seem a bit strange that BMW didnt......looks like a bit of a cost cutting exercise to me

I agree with lez that they usually change them in pairs (usually the two front outer/closest to the wheel ones)because they are prone to tearing through moving in both directions.ie when you have the wheel on full lock where as the others all rear and front inners only go in a circular motion and have less stress.

Hi

It appears they just replaced what they could get away with:-(. My local garage is quoting £179. I took it back to the council MOT station it failed at and he was the one who confirmed my fears re other side this morning. Oh well after the scrape yesterday I will await the third thing !!

Same thing, MOT failed, CV boot had a split, drivers side, passenger one was ok, but possible replacement in the future. I paid £80 labour for one side, and the part from BMW was about £30 rumour has it you buy the same part for £6

It's a labour intensive job but if thats £179 labour for one side then it's a bit too much, I do admit at knowing my local garage a little too well, so I would guess my labour price is pretty good. If you weren't so far out I would tell you to take it to him on the mates rates and all. Shop around some more, and a little more leg this time.
