My 2003 e53 has something called an car active antenna on the top of the passenger window and rear passenger door. They are very ugly and I’d like to remove them, or perhaps swap them for something nicer if I can - any ideas what it’s for and if I can remove.

It’s worth knowing that my car has an aftermarket xtrons android stereo - Not the biggest fan of it so far as it’s proving a it of a git to set up, but that’s for another time!

It might have a free-view box attached to the head unit.
I have one in my e53 fitted before i bought it and i just press on the "aux" tab i think it is and the tv comes on but i also had a remote for it and that was the clue to it being fitted but took me a few minutes to get into it.
The 2 aerials in mine are at the very top of the windscreen passenger side and passenger side window the one at the back not the rear window.

Yes, what you described is the same - are they about 6” by 1.5”? Mine are pretty ugly so I guess if they are for freeview removing shouldn’t be an issue!

I don't notice mine any more did when i first got the car 3 years ago.
On the odd trip to the shops with the wife i put the news channel on.
I have even watched a film when our daughter is down and i have taken them clothes shopping lol.
ps. i have the 9" head unit that stands out a bit so can see the picture a bit better.

I had a freeview box in my 4.4 I put the antenna's in the rear spoiler out of site

Not sure mine has freeview - had a look in the settings and can’t see where it might be?

Mine comes on when i press on AUX.

I don’t even have an AUX option but I think it’s because I have an xtrons stereo. Need to do some digging on this as the I-bus app is confusing me!

The AUX option is one of the screen icons on both of mine.
