2010 40d thumping on pulling away

Post by mr angry » Mon Oct 25, 2021 12:00 pm

I have a 2010 x5 40d. If pulling out of a junction (sometimes) it will sometimes give a speed related thumping noise for a few seconds which seems to be coming from under the rear passenger footwell area. Am I right in thinking that there is a rear prop shaft support bearing there and could this be the issue or maybe a faulty rear shaft cv?

There is a centre support bearing/universal joint and it looks to be in that area. Changing it (the official way) needs special tools (specific tightening angles + torque) and replacement of the nuts at each end. It also ‘suggests’ the exhaust has to come off as well.

Worth checking for loose under shields, gearbox support strut or exhaust may be?

In many other cars it would be simple case of lying underneath and having a look, but from memory the rear shaft is behind the exhaust and heat shields making it a pita to get to.
