2020 X3 Engine Air Filter

Post by Brewfan » Wed Jul 20, 2022 7:46 pm

Has anyone changed the engine air filter on their own? Dealership wants $600 to change filters….we can find how to change cabin filter but not engine air filter…the only video we found was for changing 2013 and engine isn’t the same. Thx!

No, this is the engine air filter as found in ‘Fuel preparation & supply’. The cabin filter is inside the vehicle (known as the micro filter) and located in the passenger side footwell. If you want the air filter that feeds the engine, mixes with fuel etc, then this is the one

You need to state which engine you have. These images are for the G01 20i, in production since 2017 (planned end 2024). ‘G01’ is the BMW production name for your X3. Most current models have ‘G’ prefix. Earlier ones were ‘E & F’ series. All current ICE powered X3’s are a variant of the G01, hence needing the engine size and fuel type. :)

It does, and the instructions above are exactly the same. :). This is for the engine air cleaner filter in the engine bay. As said the cabin filter is inside the car above the passenger side footwell.

The puzzle for me is it says the car is a 30i, but fitted with a 4-cyl 2.0L engine :scratchhead:

Did a dealership really quote 600 bucks to change two filters?

USA. 30i = 248bhp 2.0 turbo. Not sure we get them in the UK. IIRC their F25/F26 28i was a turbo 4-pot too, and we didn't get petrol F25/F26.

‘Decoding’ a BMW from its model code used to be easy! I had the same issue with the G21 330e. That’s a 4-pot with an electric engine and not the IL6 we’re used to. The 330d is the IL6 though (as is the 330i)! Thanks for the assist :D .

Wouldn’t surprise me at all. Dealers there can do as they wish. New car buyers are turning up to collect their new shiny only to be told the price is now $20k over list, take it or leave it!

Even then that’s kinda pricy. Wiper blades in the UK are about £25 (front/pair) and £8 (rear) and air filters around £40 or less which means one hell of a markup for labour. It’s not even a long job.

I’d say 30 mins max for a DIY job… even for an absolute non mechanic such as myself.
