Hi All; picked up a nail unfortunately in a rear tyre. Possible new tyre required. I just want to check, as there seems a lot of debate on-line about tolerances for tyre tread depth differences on X Drive vehicles. Mine is the GO1, 2.0d, almot 2 years old, so I don't want to invalidate any warranty with regards the X-drive/transmission box etc.
I accept that both tyres on the same axle will have to be replaced together: Rear tyres seem to be over inflated, (though they are not, double checked) as tyre wear has been consistently more in the tread centre. Anyway, I have minimum 3.5 mm tread rear, & 4.5mm across both front tyres. Given that new Pirelli PZeros will have 7 mm?? tread, that would give a difference of 3.5 mm between front & (new) rear treads. Is this within BMW tolerances? Can I get the correct information on these tolerance to ensure compliance with BMW recommendation?? Thanks

I don't know about the G models, but on the earlier cars it used to be max. 2mm tread depth difference between all four tyres. Have you checked in the car's handbook? I'm sure that there's reference to tread depths in my F25's book. Personally, I'd rather go by that source as dealers are notorious for giving conflicting information.

This is straight from the official manual …… note last paragraphs as well. 2mm difference anywhere.

Interesting……thank you; is this available to download from BMW? I saw the technical manual online, but it required a login to access the information. 2 mm is not much difference, & would indicate that I would need to replace 4 tyres, due to a nail in one of them

Sadly not. It came from a site since ordered closed down by BMW. Today it’s behind a paywall. Annoyingly even their parts system that used to be readily available went on line only for dealers at the end of 2019 so cars made since can’t have parts checks other than through a main dealer.

I had a defective tyre on the X6 a couple of years back and that forced a complete (expensive) full set change. I wasn’t pleased.
