I got a letter from BMW yesterday telling me my car is due for an EGR cooler replacement, under recall. It had one just before the first lockdown (Feb.2020).

I'll be 'phoning the $tealership later, and I'll get back to you with the outcome.

I've just spoken to the service receptionist at Vertu BMW, and there is a second recall. :o
I suppose we should be grateful BMW are going to these lengths.

Nothing for my X6 on the DVLA recall site. Might be for the X3 models only. BMW changed both front airbags on our E46 about 5 years ago. Something to do with the ‘explosive’ in the inflated cartridge being damp. Covered millions of airbags on multiple makes/models globally. The car was 12 years old at that point.

Had the egr cooler replaced under the recall on my x5 (f15) last week. On the last recall it was just inspected.
It looks like it’s a massive recall for replacement egr coolers this time around.

A bit of digging looks like it might be connected with an existing (now extended) campaign for 4-cyl diesels from 2010-2018 and certain 6-cyl diesels from 2011 to 2018. Risk of glycol leak leading to a fire.

According to manual, replacement (the ‘official’ way) is quite involved with draining the coolant, removing the fan cowl, removing the intake silencer and then undoing the bits around and involved with the EGR cooler itself. Of course there’s bound to be a way of doing all of this without all the various steps, but then a Dealer has to make money somehow…. :P :P

I would suspect that they won't fully drain the coolant, simply drain just enough and top-up as necessary. When mine goes in I'm going to ask them to fully drain and flush the system and re-fill with new coolant. Obviously they are going to charge me handsomely for the privilege, but I don't hold with all this "lifetime" malarky. By the time my car goes in again it will be over 10 years old.
TBH, I had already thought I'd have the coolant replaced when the MOT is done in October.

I’m almost certain that when I first had my E53 in 2005, the bi-annual brake fluid change was a brake fluid & coolant replacement. Then the coolant bit stopped. ‘Lifetime’ is BMW Speak for “as long as the warranty lasts” :x
