Okey dokey, boring, tedious, unnecessary? Yes all of those things I know

The current summer wheel set are wheel type 300 with Continental rubber, the full winter set up is Pirelli 'square' tyres on staggered rims, type 300's again, The winter set are fine but the 285 tyre on the rear though well within recommendations does look a bit odd compared to a 315 tyre.

I was focused on buying four front type 227's (with spacers on the rear axle), but i still have a perfect unused set of type 259's in Orbit grey, and the question is should I carry on with the 227 proposal, or buy two front 259's for refurb to match, thus rendering the rear pair as expensive ornaments?

If you're still with me? the current winter type 300's would then get all season tyres which in time replace everything else. UK weather is such now that snowy winters are a rare event in the south east.

So, continue and buy four of these,

Or buy two fronts to make a set of four of these

If I'm honest, I've never been sure about my choice of Orbit Grey wheels on a Space Grey car. The silver 227's would look good, imo,, and allow me to sell, (or try - again) the 259 set. If I buy two more front 259's the cheaper option, then the rear pair are wasted.

FWIW the type 300's look like this.

I could of course sell the 259 set albeit at a loss, and just leave everthing else alone 🤔 Money in as opposed to out.]

I'm glad I'm not the only one with wheel quandaries.

You can probably guess which style gets my vote.............. But if you can't, I would source another pair of front 259s and keep the rear pair so that you have a "proper" set.

Two people with the same "sickness"

I like the 259's as well but it's my colour choice I'm unsure about on my colour car. Buying two more fronts is relatively easy but they'd have to be Orbit too, or I'd end refurbishing six wheels to maintain a viable set of staggered and square set ups. That's costly.🤔

I had Anthracite wheels on my Silbergrau E46. I didn't think it looked toooo bad...........

......... But you do need to keep the tyres well "dressed". IIRC, mine weren't in those pics.

Space Grey bodied BMWs i really like, it's probably my favourite colour, but dark grey/anthracite wheels with it is less than a great match, BMWs Orbit Grey is pretty dark too. Careful thought is still required for me to decide.

With the recent loss of the opportunity to buy the set of 227s now, I've decided to refit the summer set when I return to the UK in a few weeks. Thereafter I'll seek out a front pair of type 259s to pair with the existing fronts of the spare set. If that takes an age or perhaps doesn't even come to fruition, so be it, beyond that I may not bother further.

My own deliberations can get rather tiresome.

Bringing this thread back to life I have finally sorted my wishes. It does involve wheel set #4 being acquired, but longer term gives me a clearer path to streamline my stock of wheels down to summer and winter sets.

So, I have bought a set of genuine winter type 611 wheels specifically compatible with Pirell 285 40 20 ☆ rated winter tyres fitted all round. These differ as the fronts are normal 10" but the rears are an odd 10.5" with a suitable offset to look right on the back. These were created for the F85/86 so will need a simple spigot on the rear axle, happily I have some.

These are freshly refurbished with half worn used tyres so I can use them straight away for this winter season at least. When necessary I'll have the same new tyres I have on another set of wheels transfered. This will release some 'rare' type 300m (X5/6m) wheels to sell, form an orderly queue 😀

Short term I'm going to need a bigger shed!

I'm glad to see you're finally on the way to having the set-up you want. Four sets, though??? :o

Probably, bit of an issue here with a hosepipe ban means handling the summer set, which are covered in grit isn't ideal 🤔

Well courtesy of DHL my recent purchase arrived a day late.

I often suffer with bad luck. This is an example, the seller just had the wheels refurbished but whoever did it seems to have assumed one size of tyre, which these rims are designed for meant one size of wheel. But regardless, with directional tyres this is an issue of course, two are the wrong way round. Front rims are regular 10", rears are 10.5" as noted previously.

Hassle now to get a mobile guy out to turn them before I can bolt them on the car. :x

Still, the rims are nice.
