aux belt failure x5 40d

2010 X5 40D

Started car this afternoon and went to drive away and felt/heard a thud. Noticed loss of power steering so had a peek under the bonnet to see that the aux belt had come off. Due to it getting dark I just parked it up after a cursory look. It is not easy to see the idlers and tensioner from the top, but could see that the crank pulley looked to be intact and still in place.

Had a quick look online for an aux belt kit with idlers and tensioner but struggling to find any. Also struggling to find any posts relating to such a failure on this engine. Has anyone experienced this issue and /or purchased a new aux belt kit?

Not seen such yet. The only value kit shown is for cars with adaptive suspension. What the actual difference is I can’t see from the RealOEM data.

The good book suggests you need to get the electric fan & cowl off and there’s a special tool (a long steel pin) that has to be inserted in the tensioner to get it out of the way (by rotating the pulley below it clockwise thereby increasing the spring loading on it) and for some slack before fitting a replacement belt.

It doesn’t look difficult but there’s very little room to play with. It might be possible to get into the gap without removing the fan cowl.

Did it have the recall for the bolt on a tensioner that could shear off ?

Had a look online and this only seemed to be for M57 engine

Seems odd it only lists cars with adaptive suspension

Sorry I meant Adaptive Drive (which I think is the same thing), and I still would expect a kit for those without. Perhaps there’s a hard service interval for that variant - not that it’s mentioned. The belt’s the same!

Just had a look and lower crank pulley has failed. Looking at eurocarparts they want £499…wtf

Its basically the crankshaft pulley which has split into two parts where the rubber joining them has deteriorated, split then separated.

I managed to find one on ebay for £200 but the seller uses royal mail who are striking. Guess the car will be off the road til next year
