Intermittent starting problem.

Post by Al4693 » Tue Feb 07, 2023 11:44 pm

My E53 3.0d 2005 facelift has just started with a fault on starting. The engine starts but Immediately stops. This repeats for about half a dozen times, but then it will start with no issues. It happens mostly when warm, just after a short journey and when the car has been stopped a short time. The battery is fairly new, and fully charged, there are no dashboard warnings and no other problems.
Has anybody encountered such issues?

Any fault codes.
That is the first thing you need.

Warm starting is often caused by a cam sensor fault but you would need a code to confirm or rule out , its usually only a warm starting issue ,will fail to start several times ,long crank then after a couple of times run fine till the next time.

That's very helpful, thanks. My son has a tester which he loaned out but is recovering it this weekend so that we can run a test.

If possible use one that can read the BMW codes out correctly rather than just list generic ‘P’ codes. It makes it a lot easier to decode and advise.. :) :)

Ran test on the Carly and it showed camshaft sensor issue. I've booked it into my local BMW indie.
