I have recently got myself a 2005 E53 3.0D
I got it with the intension's of fitting a tow bar for a boat.
Was all good when I first seen the car and since fixed a fan blower issue, new resistor! now in the process of doing drivers and passenger windows regulators and also the earth trap in engine bay as slow crank when staring.
My power steering feels heavyish is this normal for an x5 or should it be nice and light.

Hello and :hi:

X5s made between mid-2004 and early 2005 suffer from starter motor issues. Worth checking the actual current being drawn whilst cranking. It should not exceed 180A. If it does then be suspicious. The one on mine drew 900A and was replaced under warranty. Our 2005 built 3-series with the same engine failed about 8 years ago and was drawing 500A.

PAS on the E53 was always on the slightly heavy side I found (compared to later cars). If the fluid hasn’t been replaced then it should be done. BMW used to do it at two year intervals but stopped in about 2006/7. If it’s very heavy then that suggests a seals issue somewhere.

Transmission fluids should also be done, but before you change the gearbox fluid, check its colour. It should be clear. If it’s black/dirty then beware as that indicates worn internal clutches on the auto box.

Hi.
Thanks for the info, Starter motor and battery were changed by the previous owner 2 months ago, I had a quick look at cable and it looks naff, just waiting for replacement cable and will fit and will let you know of any change. I will see my BMW specialist about doing steering and gearbox easier for him.
