Hi guys, i am posting on behalf of my dad to try and get some information on what he needs to put bluetooth into his newly purchased X5, his phone is an iphone 3gs and the car is a 2002 x5 3.0d sport...

so from what i have been able to piece toghether from other forums i "think" he needs

snap in adapter for armrest, (will he need anything more like cabling?)

BMW ULF bluettoth adaptor( 13th gen??)
bmw bluetooth aeriel

is this all? or do i need more stuff?

his car has the in dash business cd player with the 6 disc in the boot, but he is looking to upgrade to the widescreen as it looks better

i have the same car, and the same iphone, you dont need a bluetooth adaptor the car is already bluetooth enabled, im assuming yours is the model with the telly/satnav in the dash?
check out your owners book for the step by step to pairing them together, i cant remember exactly how i did mine, but it works a treat, all my contacts were immediatly transferred to the car, only thing is the SMS dosnt work, im sure someone will be along to guide you with it all in a minute,

They are not all Bluetooth equipped. Yours may have been, but some are not and hence require the purchase of a bluetooth ULF etc (p.s. I have edited this post as the word NOT was missed out first time round )

Not aware that they are all BT enabled? I certainly had to pay for that option.

Sorry - for some reason when I typed my post on the iphone, it missed out the "not", which was the most critical word in the sentence. Meant to say they are NOT all equipped with bluetooth

Just to add, even having TV & Sat Nav does not equal bluetooth.

They were all separate additional options and so every car is different; you could have BT with no TV, Nav with no TV, NAV with TV but no BT, etc. (Although I don't think you could get TV without the Nav and I'm not sure who would spec that even if you could)

Yes seperate options, albeit full comms pack consisted of NAV, TV & phone set up, ( whether BT or if older hardwired phone). To add yet further confusion all cars from certain date (sorry cant recall which), had BT wiring prep even if BT not installed/optioned.

If you got an iPhone you can't it was only really the older technology phones that transferred the messages. There is a compatability list somewhere with phones models that work.

Hi guys, we got the bluetooth thing sorted out, it already had a nokia handsfree in car kit so my dad will just use his old nokia and put his iphone on divert when driving, cheap fix lol

BUT! ON the other hand....

He bought a bordmonitor screen off ebay, and i went to fit it expecting a wee blue and white plug to be there, and yep, you guessed it, nothing of the sort lol, so do you guys have any soloutions? it has the bmw professional cd player, there are 2 of the big black lockdown style multiplugs in the back but nothing there resembling the 2 little plugs needed, you can unclip little plugs out of the main plug, but none off these were the right shape to fit it.

You asked about the monitor upgrade in your first post but I don't think anyone replied to that bit, including me . If I had I could have saved you the purchase of the monitor.

The monitor is not a simple plug and play in a car with the stereo in the dash like yours - the monitor itself is not a radio or amplifier, its purely a screen. In cars with a screen upfront there is a separate radio & amp unit in the boot along with other units like the sat nav drive & TV. To install a monitor in yours requires a massive amount of stripping, re wiring and running leads from front to back and buying the separate radio & amp unit. The on screen display when you don't have nav is very very poor also, so to make it worthwhile you would have needed a nav drive too.

I really wish I'd said this before you went out and bought the monitor!

What monitor did you get - the widescreen or the small screen one?

yeah it was the widescreen one, i had looked at quite a few guides on changing them over and had tried looking for info on the swaps but i didnt really find anything saying that only certain years onwards could do it. i think the problem i'm finding is info on the web on X5's isnt very vast, maybe thats more down to the buyer/owner type, possibly more likely to pay a tech to have something done, maybe only now are they becoming more accessible to the "diy" typers, oh well, i'll let the old man know then, he'll probably just re-sell it on ebay again. should hopefully get his money back.

so is there any real upgrade options for him that dont involve rewiring the car? cos my days of doing that are over lol i'm guessing it its just a case of an aftermarket stereo as his only option then?

You'd be surprised at just how much information is available. The issue really is that most of the data is from the US - biggest market - which has far stricter obligations on manufacturers to release data. The US also has less draconian rles on what you can and can't fit accessories wise.

Xoutpost.com is a good place to look, US based but members all over the place. Most of us have probably found answers there at some point. And there's us and several others. I find the biggest issue is getting the search terms right as some items can be a bit obscure, or in obscure places. I found the transmission manual on a site in Finland!

An after market system might well be your best bet. If you want to see just how big a Satnav upgrade is, get yourself over to bimmerretrofit.com (you'll need to register to get the guides) and pull down a copy of the OEM instructions telling how it's done. As has been hinted at, it is a major job.
