when did sat nav dvd start to include postcode search

Post by mrmjn » Thu Sep 15, 2011 11:44 pm

Hi guys as above really, I am after upgrading my sat nav and I am aware of various ways of obtaining this but would like an original disc from what year or disc number did post code search come in?

I have 02 dvd disc at the moment, can I put any year up until current

It must be later than 2005 as I have a 2005 DVD in mine that as far as I can workout does not include postal code search.

I would also like to upgrade to disc to a later year

I read somewhere that the sat nav in 2002 car may be running the mk1 system which is a CD format but not certain. I'm sure someone will be along soon to advise. :)

I don't think the E53 has any official version which allows full post code input AFAIK.......ridiculous though it may seem, given that a £100 Tomtom has done for years!

When looking for a later disc make very sure whether your satnav is a Mk1 or Mk2 as it makes a big difference -Mk2 is DVD only- personally, I would look for a Mk2 on ebay as its just a plug and play swop out and the functionality is much better. I don't think you can get recent discs on CD, someone may have the cutoff dates.

Newest versions with harddrive and other E70s I think have full postcode input, but not E53s, not from BMW anyway.

Pre iDrive sat navs only have 5 character postcodes as the navigation databases were never designed to work with the UK's 7-digit system. Some codes do work, but not the full 7-character version. It never got updated on OEM map discs. How that got missed I don't know as it's not even as if we only just started using postcodes. It did seem an amazing omission.

I think the sat nav disks changed from cd to dvd with the facelifts so prob late 2003.My Y reg had cd and it was way slower so worth upgrading imo......but then is it worth upgrading to bmw or aftermarket.
I like the oem set up but it is pre historic not being able to put a 7 digit postcode in......without using a different sourced map disk and 25 diferrent buttons to press to enter it

My 53 plate facelift uses the DVD system too.

Upgraded the disc to 2011 maps through a website link given to me by another member, but believw he is no longer trading.

Just had to get used to searching on street name rather than postcode!

Do any of the OE BMW discs (dvd/cd) have postcode search? I know when I upgraded the M5's dvd it was with an aftermarket disc that used the latest BMW DVD but with a postcode search facility added to it.

None of the OE discs ever had the full capability AFAIK. It's not even particularly good on the iDrive CIC system. I tend to send it to the car (E71) from Google before leaving home. It's spot on when I do that though  You do need to be a registered user with Google though, it won't send to a car unless you have an account - and you need BMW Assist enabled

Word of advice....don't report back on any of it as discussions of non-oem or pirated / hacked software are not welcomed by mods for obvious reasons......BMW can and do take action against those promoting such stuff.

Well thats a shame because they work very well, had mine for months and is fine although the camera warning mode is a little annoying at times, it can be turned off...not that I'm promoting it in anyway shape or form. :)

And if course the stupid thing is that they only need to make the price more reasonable and that would boost sales. If what the Dealer told me about the update that's just been done on my E71 is right, the future is disc free and all updates will come as part of the servicing for the first three cycles. What was not clear wax 'and then what?' Given it's a 'plug the car in' type update that could be an interesting issue.

I think the biggest thing now isn't the actual mapping data, as the ancillary bits added to it like speed limits, cameras, places if interest. Perhaps the drive towards internet connected vehicles will allow for faster real time data. Mind you, that could eat up a fair chunk of monthly data allowances!

My local Dealer told me that the Mk4 nav disc is now £190 and the iDrive multi-disc for those that use it is cheaper at £185. 3 DVDs, load once, enter licence key and let the system chunter away doing its updates as you drive over the next few days. The version now beginning to appear no longer has TMC either as BMW have dropped it from new production from this month. It's being replaced by RTTI, Real Time Traffic Information. And that is not (yet) retrofittable.

Don't want to take this thread too far off piste, but just a quick question to X5Sport. Did you say you'd had an update to you satnav on your X6? Only reason for asking is that as you know I've been giving BMW grief over my satnav and they told me that they now realised there were problems with the system (lots of complaints from other customers), but weren't entirely sure if it was down to the maps data or the system software (bizarre thing is that if I look up the addresses that my system can't find on the Navteq website, they are there, so clearly something has got lost in the transfer). I was told they would let me know when a system update was available, plus I could have free map updates until the problem is sorted. I also tend to send the location to my car like you from Google maps before travel, but that obviously doesn't work if you're out and about...

System software and maps updated last Friday. It's free too. Should be done as part of the servicing. I heard about it from the mini sales folks hen ordering ours and went and found the Dealer Principal to check. He agreed it was a free update and when the drivers door upper seal was changed under warranty they also plugged the car in and updated it.

BMW have actually changed the system itself from this month but other than the dropping of TMC in favour of RTTI, I don't know what else has changed. I only got the car back from its paint overhaul (defective clearcoat) yesterday - does look good - so I haven't checked out the system yet.
