Can anyone please tell me where the pump is located and how to access it

At a guess it's somewhere underneath near the tank. See if you can spot the bracket anywhere, or track the fuel pipe back from the Aux Heater Unit.

the webasto pump is found under a large black plastic cover under the car rear passenger side - kerbside.
its held up by about 12 bolts and a right pita to remove with hidden bolts all over the place!
if you do remove this, its worth changing your diesel fuel filter which is found here also( facelift model anyway) as its probably never been changed due to the awkwardness of removing the cover.

Do all BMW Designers have to pass the 'let's make it as awkward as possible' training, or just the ones with sadistic tendencies?

try working on a peugeot/citreon, now they are awkward!! bmws are perfect by comarason!

You forgot the odd curse here and there but so true...we never used to have to plug them into computers before to diagnose problems

Thanks for all the replies - I have got the sill covers off on the n/s anyway - so I'll take off the rear cover to check the ticker pump and, in accord with the good advice, change the fuel filter as well. (The reason for removing the sill covers was to access the brake pipes running to the rear calipers - one of which had perforated due to corrosion and with the other not far off! - I'll enter a specific post on this in case its useful)

Got the cover off - you were dead right - absolute PITA but has done my limbo skills no end of good !

Re. testing the ticker pump - was thinking of disconnecting the fuel pipe at the webasto and routing to a jar, unplugging the pump from the harness, applying 12v DC via a battery charger - then checking for pump running noise and fuel delivery to the jar - does this sound reasonable?
