wheel balancing

I am taking off my 19 Inch wheels and putting on a 17" set fitted with winter tyres. I was always taught that on y the front or steering wheels need balanced, but someone said the other day that all four should be balanced 'particularly on four wheel drive vehicles'
What are the thoughts of fellow forum members ?

Yes - regardless of 4WD ALL the wheels should always be balanced on any car.
Otherwise you'll get the shacking in the car at a varied/particular speed.

Thanks. I didn't fit them but they are a second hand set so I don't know the history. I will get the full set balanced

All wheels should be balanced regardless even the spare. As with brake discs the rears can still cause vibrations in the car.

I think OP may be thinking of wheel alignment/tracking as on our x's they need four wheel alignment as oposed to just the fronts.
