Standard stereo capable of MP3?

Is the standard stereo on my comms pack equipped 2005 sport capable of playing MP3s?
When I say MP3's I mean MP3's burned to a CD.
Most of the BMW range in 2005 could do it yet my X5 doesnt seem to be doing it.
Also is there any way of getting it to play MP3's from a USB? I have looked in the glovebox (obvious place) and dont seem to see any connections.

Comms pack must mean you have a CD changer then as you won't have the dash version?

Assuming either the tape or screen upfront - no. The last batch of X5's came with the MP3 compatible CD changer. If you can get one of them, you can do what you want.
No USB connections either. You can get the AUX lead (OEM from BMW) to fit behind the 16:9 screen and extend the headphone jack to the glove box, then take it from there...
Or do the same with one of those tape adapters...

Yes thats right, plays tape up front and CD changer in boot.
My mates 2004 E46 can play MP3's burned to a CD. And my Merc can do the same aswell as plug a USB memory stick in the glovebox using a Mercedes cable.
I just wanted to know if the 2005 X5's can do the same. Its nice to be able to get 100+ tracks on one CD or a USB.
Anyobody know?

Ok Sanj, that puts me out of my misery, thanks.
Seems like a lot of work

How did you think I felt when I ordered the X5 new, without MP3 capability and a tape deck when the older 3 series was capable of all of that?

Sanj, is there therefore a standard headphone jack output on the back of every 16:9 screen?
Any idea how much the oem BMW lead costs? Can a headphone jack to USB adaptor lead then be used instead and is it all plug and play?
Sorry if this has been covered before

It's not a standard 3.5mm point. BMW offered a kit that connected into the head unit I think via an Aux port, and put a 3.5mm connection into the back right corner of the glove box (unless it was done by my idiot dealer who put it in the front right which meant the glovebox could not be closed with a jack plug in place!!) They charged £149 for the priviledge in 2005.
The MP3 capable CD-changer was installed in the E53 from around October 2005 (a year later than it should have been), though the cassette player remained in the dash. It seemed to me that the remaining non-MP3 units werevall shipped to the US nd used in the E53 whilst the other models all got the newer MP3 version. I never used mine even once in 6 years. As pvr said, even our July 2005 E46 had MP3 in the CD-changer and Mini-Disc in the dash!
This was the Aux kit....

X5Sport has the right part covered here - see his link.
On the back of the X5's there is an additional connector to attach the AUX cable.
The lead comes in at no more than £40 I think, unless they've pushed up the price!
There must be a jack to USB lead on eBay the far east have already listed!
Apologies to all far eastern forum members, just messin'!

Aside from burning an MP3 CD, is there anywat to tell just by looking at the CD changer?
