Diesel soot on bumper

Hi folks

Our X5 3.0d had the 4.6 petrol exhaust fitted when we bought the car. It looks ok and sounds lovely but the soot up the back bumper is a nightmare. What are my options? To replace the rear pips completely is gonna be a huge cost I imagine and I'd rather just keep cleaning it every few days than spend loads of money. I wondered if a custom exhaust place might be able to extend the pips out a bit? Just a thought but maybe someone else has some other ideas?

Just wondering out loud if you could get a chromed section that fits over the existing pipes but where the rear end is not cut square but angled, and the longer part of the angled end is installed uppermost. Assuming this makes sense, it might give your bumper more soot protection.

Something like the top 4 here (albeit somewhat shorter lengthwise) if an image makes more sense than my description.

But obviously custom made to fit the E53. All you need is the right type of steel and a metalworking shop.

Other than that I can only think of putting something on the bumper to make it easier to clean, though that is more likely to detract from the look of the car.. :(

Of course (and highly tongue in cheek) you could get the CAT replaced by a DPF - there is a proper BMW one and Owners are supposed to be 'encouraged' to have one fitted should their exhaust break..... :poke:

Somehow I suspect that being a BMW part it would fail your 'not spend a fortune' requirement.. :o

I'd also have a look to see when the air filter was last changed- if it's been a while replacing it would reduce the black smoke/soot.

Also, go easy with the loud pedal! My E53 3.0d used to throw out a huge plume in kickdown!

Crankcase breather and all filters and fluids were done in December when I bought it. I know I get alot of smoke on kickdown, more so apparently because of the remap but I like the extra economy I get from the remap so I don't want to revert.
I think the extensions are probably the way ahead, it's what I was thinking of myself. I have plenty of customers who may take it on (I'm in the welding supplies industry) so may have a few words with the good ones!
